APPLICATION FILED APB. 13,1906.

EXTENSION-TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 14, 1907.
plieation filed April 13, 1906- Serial No. 311,605-
To to whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, DAVID P. RooKEFEL- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sunbury, in the county of N orthumberland, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in extension tables, and its primary object is to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction, durable and easily manufactured.
It is well known that in solid pedestal extension tables, and in particular those of the larger sizes, as for instance, an eight foot table the table tops when moved beyond the direct support of the pedestal braces require some additional supporting means, as the mere dove-tail and key-connection between the top and cross beam braces is hardly suflicient to bear the weight of heavy tops.
It is the purpose of this invention therefore to construct an extension table which may be made in the larger sizes and in which this defect will not be present.
To this end the improvement consists in the provision of a supplemental rail running intermediate the pedestal braces and serving as a track upon which a pair of grooved floating braces are slidably mounted, one of said floating braces beingdisposed at each end of the supplemental rail, whereby the weight of the tops will be borne in great part by the rail and braces and the tops themselves firmly supported in any position.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter fully described pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of the table in its extended position. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line Fig. 1. Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section on the line 4 4c of F 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view in perspective of one of the floating braces.
' Like parts are designated by similar numorals in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 7 designates'the pedestal of the table which is provided at its top with a cross beam 8, secured thereto by bolts or other preferred means. The opposite ends of the cross beam have secured thereto the braces 9 which are provided on their opposite sides with dove-tailed grooves 10, as shown. Said braces extend. transversely of the cross beam 8 and beyond the opposite sides thereof.
The upper face of the pedestal is provided with a transverse slot extending parallel with the braces, a beam 11 being secured in said slot and provided on its upper face with a seat in which the cross beam 8 is received, the upper face of beam 11 being flush with that of cross beam 8. Carried upon the up per face of said beam 11 and extending transversely of the cross beam 8 and parallel with braces 9 is a rail 12 grooved on both sides as shown and secured by any preferred means The opposlte ends of braces.
to said beam. 9 and rail 12 are connected together by cross pieces 13 secured thereto in any preferred manner.
Slidable upon each end of rail 12 is a floating brace 20 provided with guide grooves upon its under face in which the rail shoulders fit. A stop 21 is secured to the under face of each table top in the path of movement of the floating braces and serves to limit the outward movement thereof, the upper face of each floating bracebeing slightly under-cut to form a shoulder 22 upon the outer end thereof to contact with stop 21.
It will be seen from Figs. .1 and 4 that when the table is in its extended position, the tops are practically beyond the direct support of the cross beam and are merely held. in place by the key-connection between the cross beam braces and the top strips. By the provision however of the rail 12 and the floating brace slidable upon the ends of said rail, an
additiomrl support For the top is obtained since said tops bear directl by means of the floating braces upon the rail which is connected with the pedestal. Each top will therefore besup' 'iorted at threedistinot points instead of two only, as has been heretofore the case.
lllurther description of the operation of the device is thought to be unnecessary.
What is cl aimed, is
1. In an extension table, the con'ibination of a pedestal a cross beam. mounted thereon braces attached to the upper face of said cross beam, and extending transversely thereof; a rail attached to said cross beain intermediate said braces; tops; strips secured. to the under face of each top; the strips of one top being slidable along the inner sides of said braces and the strips of the other top being slidable along the outer sides of said braces; a floating brace slidable upon each end of said rail; and means upon the under face of each top to limit the movement of the corresponding floating brace.
2. 111 an extension table, the combination of a pedestal; a cross beam mounted thereon; braces attacl'ied to the upper face of said cross beam and extending transversely of said cross beam; guide grooves 'l'ori'ned on the opposite sides o'l said braces; a rail attached to the upper 'lace oi? said cross beam between said braces, and extending iarallel therewitl'i; tops; a pair o'l strips secured to the under face of each top the strips of one top being slidable along the inner sides of said braces, and the strips 01" the other top being slidable along the outer sides of said braces, and eacl'i pair of strips being provided on its sides adjacent the braces with guide grooves alining with the grooves in the braces; a key slidable in each pair of alining grooves; a grooved floating brace slidable upon the upper face of said rail; and means secured to the under face of each top for limiting the movement of the corresponding floating brace.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature,
,in presence of two Witnesses.
