Wm P MENTOR HOl/VARD, OF LEW'ISVHJLE, TEXAS.
WIRE-FENCE CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 30, 1907.
Application filed November 1,1906. semi No. 341,649.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MENTOR HowAin), a citizen of the United States, residing at Lewi sville, in the county of Denton and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ire-Fence Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in wire fence clips, and particularly in that type of clip which is designed to secure together a series of line Wires and a series of stay wires or pickets, which latter comprise two members provided at top or bottom with a curved connecting member, so as to produce an ornamental effeet.
The object of my invention is to provide a wire fence clip of this character which positively engage, by a peculiar means hereinafter described and claimed, both the line wire and the adjacent portions of the picket wire, and which will be simple in construction and cheap to manufacture and assist in producing an ornamental effect.
For a full description of the inventionand the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a face view of a portion of a fence with my improved clip applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear detail view of the clip; Fig. 3 is a side edge view of the clip; and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1. designatesthe line wires and 2 the picket Wires which are shown as embodying two parallel members spaced apart from each other and integrally connected at their upper ends by a curved cross member.
3 designates the clips. Each clip consists of a preferably metallic plate, which is provided with opposite curled edges 4 that in the present instance are formed at the opposite upper corners of the plate. The plate is also formed with a crimp 5, which is stamped up therefrom and extends transversely and entirely across the clip, preferably just below and contiguous to the curled edges 4. The metal from which the crimp 5 is formed. is punched entirely through at an intermediate point of the crimp and continued in a curl to produce a line wire engaging member 6. The surplus metal from the punched out portion that is made to form the member 6 is sheared oil so that said member is provided with a flat edge as shown engaging the rear face of the plate, and preferably the punched out portion is so formed as to produce an ornamental opening 7, which in the present instance is shown as being substantially heart shape, the margin of the plate below the crimp 5 being also correspondingly shaped.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompain'iug drawing, itwill be seen that the curled edges 4t encircle and tightly clasp both the members of the stay or picket wire, while the crimp 5 not only binds the line wire into tight frictional engagement with the two members of the picket wire, but also positively engages the line wire by means of the member (5, which is a continuation of the crimp, and. with the crimp entirely encircles the line wire as shown.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein described wire fence clip, consisting of plate provided with opposite curved edges, and with a crimp extending perpcndicillarly to the curved edges and adapted to abut against one side of a wire strand, said plate being provided at a point intermediate of the crimp with a punched out portion, and said punched out portion continuing the curve of the crimp and adapted to extend around the opposite side of said strand and positively engaging the same, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MENTOR HOWARD.
Witnesses:
