BELT- To all w/wm it may concern.-

Be it known that we, INDIA J GILBERT and DANIEL R. GILBERT, citizens of the United States, residing at \Villiamstown, in the county of d and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belts; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to adjusting and securing means for belts; and its object is to provide a device of this character whichis of attractive appearance, will admit of the belt being quickly adjusted to fit any size of waist, and which has means for quickly securing the belt in or unfastening it from position about the waist of the wearer.

The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts, which will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings we have shown the preferred form of our invention.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the belt, showing our improved adjusting mechanism secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one end of the belt. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the belt, showing in section the particular form of adjustable buckle; and Fig. 4 is a detail view of said buckle.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is aloop having one end 2 of a flexible tab 3 in position therein. This end 2 is secured to the body of the tab by means of a rivet l, which rivet also passes through one end of a metal plate 5, which is interposed between the end 2 and the body of the end 3. The free end of the plate is bent to form a hook 6, which is concavo-convex from side to side, as shown clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, and the end of the rivet 4 which is nearest the tab end 2 is enlarged to form a ball 7. The free end of tab 3 has a socket 8, which is adapted when the tab 3 is folded to receive the ball 7 and engage the same by frictional contact, thereby holding the tab in position over the plate 5 and hook 6 and concealing the hook from View. The tab 3, hooked plate 5, and 100 1 constitute one member of abelt-securing evice. Two of these members are employed, and both are alike.

The ends of the belt 9 are disposed through the loops 1 and doubled back upon itself, the extreme free ends of the belt being secured to loops 10, said loops having laterally-extending arms 10 at one side thereof, the free ends of said arms being directed upwardly and inwardly to form terminals 10', upon which is eccentrically mounted a plate 11. The body of the belt 9 is provided with a plurality of eyelets 14, said eyelets being adapted to receive a tongue 15, extending inwardly from the pivotally-mounted plate 11,

As best shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, a back plate 16 is secured to the arms 10 by directing the ends of the back plate around said arms, and the back plate is provided at its end farthest from the loop 10 with an extension 17, said extension being disposed out of line with the back plate to form an oflset, the object of said offset being to allow the tongue 15 to enter the eyelets in the belt 9, the tongue being of sufiicient length to engage the surface of said extension when in engagement with one of the eyelets, and the plate 11 is so arranged that the edge thereof containing the tongue 15 will direct that portion of the belt between the plate 11 and extension 17 abruptly out of its natural alinement. By this construction it will be seen that when the tongue 15 is directed through one of the eyelets and into engagement with the extension 17 that it will be practically impossible for the eyelet to be come disengaged from the tongue, thereby securely holding the belt in its adjusted position.
