IMPROVEMENT IN STOCKING-SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 195,662., dated September 25, 1877; application filed February 24, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHRISTOPHER (J. SHEL- BY, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Stocking-Supporter and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to supporters for stockings, and means for forming connections between the ends of cords or ropes, and the like.

It consists of a wire bent and formed into shape (hereinafter shown) so as to clasp and hold a stocking, cloth, or cord or rope.

In Figure 1 of the drawings the device is represented as holding the cord. Fig. 2 represents the device applied to a stocking.

As shown in the figures, it consists ofa single piece of brass or steel wire, the upper end of which is formed in any suitable loop for attachment to a strap or cord. The two strands are brought close together at the other end, and the doubled end is then bent over upon itself, but not so as to touch. The two strands of the wire, at the part between a and the end, may be brought closely together, and the material should have some elasticity.

The fastener or supporter is attached to the stocking, as shown in Fig. 2. The fabric is pinched between the two parts of the wire, so that the doubled end projects through, and

comes down under the bent back end b. This flattens down the fabric, and compresses it between the bent back part and the opposite wires at right angles to that part which is held between the single wires. This holds the stocking or other article securely, while, at the same time, there is no danger incurred of cutting or tearing from sharp edges or corners.

This device may have various forms of connection to a cord or strap or hook, and may be varied in size as may be required for the particular article held.

It may be used for fastening horse-blankets, and the like, and will serve a good purpose for holding a cord in any situation where a secure hold is required, with ready means for fastening and unfastening.

I claim as my invention- The fastener, consisting of a single piece of wire doubled near the center, and having the two arms adjacent for a short distance at their closed ends gradually expanded, and formed into a loop at their free ends, and having the closed lower end bent slightly back upon itself, and thus adapted to form a duplex holder or clasp for the material to be inserted, substantially as shown and described.
