WALTER H. COE, OF PROVIDENCE, RHCDE ISLAND.
PACKAGE-'ROLLI OF METALLI-C LEAF."
1'0 (//ZfZ whom, it may concern: A'
Be it known that I, WALTER H. COE, a citilen of the United States, residing at Providence, county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Package-Rolls of Metallic Leaf, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture of package-rolls of metallic leaf heretofore it has been customary to' apply wax or other adhesive material to one side of a paper strip and a powdered material to the op osite side, whereby the metallic leaf WoundJ up With the su portingstrip may be unwound from the roll without liability of running up on the back of the said stri Iis the object of my. invention to dispense `with the usel of both adhesive and non-adhesive materials in connection with the supporting-strip of a package-roll; and my inveiition consists in a package-roll of metallic leaf in which the sup orting-strip is provided with a smooth surflice upon one side and comparatively rough surface upon the other side, whereby the metallic leaf will be unequally acted upon by the surface of the said stri and the package-roll may be unwound Wit out liability of displacing the fillet of metallic leaf from its pro er connection with the unwound strip, and tlfie troublesome employment of Wax or powder will be avoided.
In the accompanying` drawings, Figure 1 re resents a side view of a package-rollof meta lic leaf, the metallic leaf being indicated by the broken line.- Fig. 2 represents an enlarged section of a portion of the outspread paper strip and the metallic leaf.
Specification of Letters Patent. Applicationiled May S1, 1906. Serial N0- 319,643.
Patented April 2, 1907;
In the drawings, A represents the spirally- Wound package-roll, the supporting-strip c of which is made smooth on the side b, which is at the outer side of the roll, and com aratively rough at the side c, upon Whic the metallic leaf d is'cleposited. The-metallic leaf when unwound from the package-roll A will be properly held on the said supportingstri by the naturai tendencylof the metallic lea to cling to the rough side and leave the smoothv side thereof.
' By the use of my im rovement'the manufacture of package-roll simplified and a great saving of time isl effected, both in their manufacture and use7 and the rolls so formed are adapted for a variety of purposes.
The required smooth and rou h surfaces may be imparted to the paper o' which the s of metallic leaf is" strip is formed either in the mill in which it isv manufactured or paper of a suitable quality and alike on both sides may have one of its sides rougliened by passing the' paper between pressure-rolls, one of which has a roughened and the other a smoothsurface.
I claim as my invention#v A package-roll of metallic leaf having its supporting-strip provided with a smooth surface at one side, and a comparatively rou h surface at the other, whereby the metalic leaf maybe suitably lieldfor delivery upon unwinding the roll. f
