Patented Feb. 12, 190?.
Application filed November 23,1905. Serial No. 288,769.
To aZZ whom it nutty concern.-
Be it known that we, ANDREW BUTOHART \WALLAOE, of Ylagner Cottage, Perry street, Masterton, in the Colony of N v. Zealand, and HERBERT Jenn J ones, of Opaki Road, Lands-downe, iiiasterton, aforesaid, both subjects of His Majesty the King of Great Britain and Ireland have invented certain new and useful improvements in 'Foucl -Rcgula tors for Pianos, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to the class of apparatus employed for improving the technique of piano'forte-players.
The invention consists of apparatus designed to be applied to the keys or? a pianolorte of ordinary construction whereby said keys are operated upon to render it necessary for the player to exert pressure above normal to depress the keys, the ar iount of extra pressure required being regulatable to suit the particular player and the circumstances, and thereby develop the muscles and increase the suppleness of a players hands and fingers.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation; 2, a plan; 3, an enlarged side sectional elevation; Fig. i, a COl1"S;rODCl1T-" front sectional elevation; Fig. 5, a plan of so A1116; and 6, a plan of one end of the rocking shaift.
The rocking shaft 1 is tubular an is journaled at one end 2 in the frame 3 of the piano and at its opposite end has a rojecti in 4:, Which is journaled in the one. of a bracket 5, secured to the frame of the piano, said bracket being constructed so that it may be sprung away from the spindle when it is desired to remove the rocking shaft. The wire springs 22 project from the rocking shal' t and bear upon the key-levers, there being one spring for each key-lever. Upon the middle of the rocking shaft is secured the lever-arm 6, to the end of which is connected the end of a tubular connecting-rod 7, which is internally screw-threaded to receive the similarlyscrevved end of the remaining cart 8 of the connecting-rod. By this arrangement the length oi the connecting-rod may be adjustecl as required to bring the required amount of initial pressure upon the key-levers.
The lovrer end of the connecting-re d is pivotally connected to one arm of a bell-crank lever 9, which vibrates in a vertical plane and is pivotally mounted at 10 in a bracket 11, secured beneath keyboard or the piano. To the other arm of ti is bell-crank lever is pivotml one on d oi a link 13, the opposite end oi which. is connected in a similar manner to i the aim l-i'i. of a belhcank lever which vibrates in a horizontal plane and is pivoted at 15 in braclvt ii. The other arm 16 of this bell-cra extends towarc the front of a screwed end 1?, which the piano and fits into a socket 18, having a head 19, which is d to serve as a pointer.
The head is slotted to receive a quadrantbrackct 20, which is screwed beneath the teyboard of screwing :rough the under side of tie head, can be enipl yed to clamp the lever in any ant has markings upon it to indicate positions or the lever to produce diile pressures of these springs upon in the c avings the springs are secured to the rocking shart oy nd riveting or soldering them in posi number or Ways which could be employed by pose.
