APPARATUS FOR ENLARGING THE AIR-PASSAGES OF THE NOSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1, Max EDUARD Gnons GOTTLIEB, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Heidelberg-Handschuhsheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Enlarging the Air-Passages of the Nose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus for enlarging the air passages of the nose and preventing the nostrils and walls of the nose from being drawnin and from falling in during breathing.
The accompanying drawings given by way of example show two forms of embodiment of the invention and in these drawings:
Figure 1 is the front elevation view of one form of embodiment of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is the top plan of same; Fig. 3 is a side elevation view of the apparatus applied to the nose. Fig. 4 shows a sectional view on line ab of Fig. 3, at a somewhat enlarged scale. Fig. 5 is the front elevation view of another form of embodiment. Fig. 6 is the top plan view of same; Fig. 7 shows a sectional view on line c-cZ of Fig. 5 and Fig. 8 represents a side elevation view of the apparatus applied to the nose.
In the form of embodiment shown by Figs. 1 to 1, two arms 2 and 3 are hingedly connected by means of the ball joint 10 (Fig. 4) with a central structure 1 which may be provided with a padding 8 intended to rest on the nose. Secured to each arm is a spring 6 the end of which presses against an oblique part of the central structure 1 and holds the arm in any of its positions. The ends of the arms 2 and 3 are provided with heads 4: and 5. In order to hold on the nose ribbons or wires 7 and 9 respectively are secured either to the central structure 1 or to the arms 2 and 3, which ribbons or wires are placed over the head or on the sides thereof for instance like the wires of eyeglasses. In the other form of embodiment shown by Figs. 5 to 8, the arms corresponding to 2 and 3 of Figs. 1 to 1 are made of a single spring lever or strip 12 connected with the central structure 1415 and to which the two heads 13 and the securing ribbons 16 are secured.
The function of the device is as follows: When the apparatus is put in position, the central structure 1 (Figs. 1 to 1) or 14l5 (Figs. 5-8) rests on the nose without pressing on the latter and is held in position on the head by the ribbons 7 or 9 (or 63). The arms 2 and 3 (or 12) are thereafter moved out of their position of rest (Figs. 4: and 5) and pressed toward each other and applied against the nose muscles 11 (or 17 of Figs. 3 and 8 respectively. Owing to the pressure of the springs 6 (Figs. 1 to 4:) acting on the arms 23 or of the spring arms 12 (Figs. 5-8) the nostrils and nose muscles are held from the outside by the heads l-5 (or 13) in such a manner that the air passages of the nose are enlarged and that the drawing in and sinking in of the nostrils and the walls of the nose during breathing and consequently the closing of the air passages are prevented whereby an abundant and increased breathing through the nostrils is afforded.
Having now fully described my said invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an apparatus of the kind described the combination of a central structure adapted to be applied to the nose, two arms, means i for pivotally connecting said arms with said central structure, springs secured to said arms and adapted to bear with their ends on inclined parts of said central structure, heads at the free ends of said arms and means for securing the apparatus to the head, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, a central structure adapted to rest on the bridge of the nose, arms mounted on said central structure and bearing against the cheeks adjacent the nose, springs fixed to the central structure, adapted to engage said arms, and a means for holding the apparatus to the head.
3. In a device of the class described, a central structure adapted to rest on the bridge of the nose, arms extending from said central structure, said arms being under tension and adapted to bear against the cheeks adjacent the nose and means for fastening the device to the head.
