' Box-FASTENER.
No. 837,752. i
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed August 25.1905. Serial N0. 275,767.
T0 all whom, it indy concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED SUTER, a citi- Zen of the Republic of Switzerland, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Box-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in shipping cases or boxes, the object being to provide a simple and novel means for locking or securing the cover on the case.
I will describe a shipping-case fastener' embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. v
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away and 4in section, of a shipping case or box with a fastener embodying my invention. Fig. 2` is a top plan thereof, partly broken away and in section; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on the line a: of Fig. 1, showing the cover-fastening means.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body portion of the case or box having at each end at the inner side a vertical flange 2, on which the cover 3 rests. On the ends of the cover 3 are mounted plates 4 and metal bars 5. At one side of the case are keepers 6, having hook portions 7, under which the plates 4 are designed to engage, and at the opposite side of the box are locking devices consisting of plates or straps 8, pivotally connected to the body of the case, as indicated at 9, and having hook portions 10 at the top for engaging over the cover. The plates or straps 8 of the locking devices are provided with outwardly-opening notches 10a, for receiving lugs 11 on the case-body, and as a means of securing the locking devices I employ spring-plates 12, which are secured to the case-body, so that their free ends may engage in recesses formed in the inner sides of the plates or straps 8, as clearly indicated in Fig. 1. As a still further means of securing the locking devices I pass screws through perforations 13 in said plates or straps, as shown in Fig. 1.
It will be noted in Fig. 2 that the side boards of the body of the case are provided with recesses 14, into which the springplates 12 may be pressed inward of the plane of the locking devices to permit the outward swinging of the locking devices 8, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The heads of the spring-plates 12 and the portions 8 of the locking devices may be provided with perforations to receive sealing-wires 15.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A shipping case or box, a cover therefor, locking devices consisting of strips of metal having recesses at the inner side, the said strips of metal being pivotally connected to the case or box and having hook portions for engaging over the cover, and spring-plates attached to the case or box and adapted to detachably engage in said recesses.
2. A shipping case or box, a cover therefor, locking devices consisting of metal plates having swinging connection with the case or box, the said plates being provided with hook-shaped upper ends for engaging with the cover, and also provided near the lower end with outwardly-opening notches, lugs on the case or box for engaging in said notches, and spring-plates on the case or box for engaging with the locking devices.
3. A shipping case or box, a cover therefor, locking devices mounted to swing on the case or box and having portions for engaging with the upper side of the cover, the said locking devices having recesses at the inner side, spring-plates on the case or box for engaging in said recesses, and sealing devices for engaging with the spring-plates and locking devices.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALFRED SUTER.
