Description
s. www? rzte tant f JOHN .DARE, OF LIBERTY, INDIANA.
mams Para: No. 83,473, dated october 27, 186s.
IMPROVE!) WASHING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it 'mwy concern Be it known that I, JOHN DARE, of Liberty, in the l county of Union, and in the State of Indiana, have iuvented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying thawing-s, and
the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, A represents arectangular box or vessel, supported upon suitable legs, and having a corrugated plate adjusted in or at the bottom thereof, as shown at E.
On the sides of the tub or vessel A, I secure adjustable springs B, which work in the loops g, andare held in the position required, by means of the keys h h.
The springs B B are adjusted at any desired angle with the plane of the vessel A.
Adj usted, and having bearings in the lupper end of the springs B B, is a suitable shaft, F, made of any material found most convenient, in which are secured arms C4 C, which project down into and work between the sides of the vessel A.
I) represents a roller, which has its bearings in the lower end of the arms O C, made of any suitable size and material, and is operated or worked-back and forth, on or over the corrugated plate or bottom, E, by means of the levers -H H, which are fastened to the arms C C, just below the shaft F.
` The roller D has attached to one end thereof a small ratchetwheel, f, in which catches a spring-pawl, ias
shown, so that the said roller D slides over the clothes or bottom, E, one way, and rolls the other way when operated by the levers H H.
The pawlj is pivoted to one of the arms C, and is held firmly against the ratchet-wheelf, by means of a small spring, c.
K represents a perforated plate, secured to and between the arms C C, just above the rubber or roller D, as shown, for the purpose of a brace or support to said arms, and perforated so that the water in the vessel will readily ilow through it, and not be dashed or forcedv before it too violently.
It will readily be seen that the roller or rubber D will perform its oilice more eifectually than if it revolved both ways, or is held rigidly in the arms C C.
Having thus'fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desireA to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the roller D, pawlj, and ratchet f, for allowing the same to move without revolving one way, and to revolve the other, when suspended from the arms C, andexterior adjustable springs,`
and operated by the double lever H, all as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, l have hereunto set my hand, this 20th day of February, 1868.
. JOHN DARE. Witnesses HENRY HUs'rED, A. F. DAvIs.
