@J XM @anni tftwe., u *naamw STEPHEN S. DAVIS, OF EDGERTN, WISCONSIN.
Lette/rs Patent No. 83,046, dated October 13, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT vIN' GATES.
The Schedule referred to in' these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom 'it ma/y concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN S. DAVIS, f Edgerton, in the county of Rock, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improve# ments in Gates; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact l'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of-reference marked thereon.
l The nature of my invention consists in the construction and general arrangement of a gate which can be opened by the driver of a carriage without dsmounting, and can be shut in the saine manner, as soon as the carriage has passed through.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and 'use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification.
A represents a frame, of suitable size, along the sideposts of which other posts, B B, are placed, between which the gates C G are pivoted, by means of a bolt passing through the post B, the lower corner of the gate C, and into the side-post of the frame A.
Onv top of the frame A, beams, D D, extend, one on each side, which beams are held up by braces, E E, and on the outer ends of the said beams, levers, F F, are pivoted. These levers are so arranged that the heavy end is outward, and the inner ends meet above the frame A, the said inner ends being connected, by means of wires, a a, with the gates O C.
From the outer ends of the levers, handles, G G, are suspended, so that when it is desired to open the gate, it is only necessary to pull on one of these. handles with a swift jerk, .and the-inner ends of the lever will raise the gates far enough to fall outwards, being, as already mentioned, pivoted in their lower corners. When it is desired to shut the gates, the -sameoperation on the same or the other handle brings the gates together. a am.
gA piece or block, H, is fastened in the centre of the gate-way, on which the gates fall.
Instead of using levers and wire, as herein described, I may use cords and pulleys, so arranged as to answer the same purpose Having thus fully described my invention,
What I' claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the wires a c, levers F F, and handles G G, or their equivalents, for the purpose of opening and closing the gates O G, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 10th day of July, 1868.
STEPHEN S. DAVIS. [1.. s.]
