Description
PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906.
J. LOPTUS.
ELASTIC SEAT.
E B m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters I atent.
Patented Sept. 4, 1906.
Application filed January 29, 1906. Serial No. 298.499.
To all whom it may concern.-
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in elastic supports especially adapted for use in connection with chairs, locomotive-seats, &c.; and the object of the invention is to produce a support having a circular compression coil-spring having radial connection with a seat for attachment thereto and by which a small spiral spring will sustain a comparatively great weight.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichigure 1 is a sectional view through a seat, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom lan view. Fig. 3 is a de tail view of the coii spring, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of a slight modification of the invention.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings b letter, A designates the top of a casing, 311C? B the bottom, each of which has a central opening A, and intermediate the covers is a spiral spring B, mounted in any suitable manner, and D is a flange which is secured l0 the marginal outline of the aperture A and extends within the casing and affords means for holding the coil-spring to its seat in place and also serving'as a guide to the circular-outlined block E, which has a shank portion E.
G G designate spiral chains or wires or other suitable connection intermediate the ring F and coil-spring, and in Fig. 4 of the drawings I have shown a slight modification of details of my invention in which I have illustrated a wire G the strands of which intersect one another, as at F ,vand engage over portions of the coil B at location diametrically op osite.
From t e foregoing it will be observed that by the peculiar construction of my invention a suitable elastic seat is provided in which the strain is distributed equally in radial directions.
While I have shown a particular application of m invention illustrating a circularoutlined b ock which yields, it will be understood that nearly the entire surface of the top may be mounted to have the yielding action and various shapes oftops may be utilized without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is- An elastic seat comprising a casing, a coilspring mounted therein, a yielding member mounted in an opening in said casing, a ring secured to said member, radial connections between said ring and spring, and a flange about the periphery of an opening in said cas ing and extending Within the casing, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of twowitnesses.
JOHN LoFTUs.
