Letters Patent No. 82,884, dated October 6, 1868; antedated September 26, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-JAR COVER.
dlgs rlgehule' :stemt tu im time lettert rrtent tnt mating mi nt tige stmt.
TO ALL WHOM I'I MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, JOHN SIDDONs, of the city of Rochester, in the State of New York, have invented o new and useful Improved Fruit-Jar Cover; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact `description thereof, reference being'had'to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, in
which the drawing is atransverse section of the same, showing my improvement.
The nature of this invention consists in an improvement in jar-covers, consisting of two metal disks joined together. I
To enable others skilled in the art to make` and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. v
The originalcovers in this class are made by joining two disks of metal, a and b, together, having a corrugation in each, a. sufficient distance from the periphery to form a. shoulder when together, for the rubber packing.
My improvemement consists in adding one or more corrugations` shown at o on one of the.disks. This forms 'a shoulder, which its ou the inside of the corrugation 'in the other disk, shown at e in the drawing.
The object of this device is to facilitate the manufacturing, thereby producing cheaper covers than the zoriginal.
By the extra corrugations, the centres of the disks are more easily adjusted when they are put together,
and the periphery of each disk is brought to its relative position, without any trouble, thereby allowing the rubber packing to bear on the offset in the neck of the jar, which is not the case if the centres of thevdisks do not register.
In the original covers there is a great diiculty-in getting the disks in their proper places, and holding `:hem so while soldering together, but bymy arrangement they adjust themselves on beingjoiued together, and-` when-adjusted, the shoulder formed by my extra corrugation in one disk, tting inside of theshoulder formed by the corrugation in the other, makes it easy to hold them while soldering.
vIt might be desirable to form two or more indeptations instead'of corrugations.
. What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Providing fruit-jar covers, consisting of two metal disks, a b, with a'corr'ugation, c, or its equivalent, for the purposes herein set forth.
