UNITED STATES PATENT QEFICE.
DANIEL S. EARLY, OF HUMMELSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,814, dated October 6, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, D. S. EARLY, of Hummelstown, in the county of Dauphin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a top view.
The object of this invention is to improve the cultivator by making it neater and simpler in construction than adjustable cultivators have been made heretofore, and by providing it with novel devices for adjusting the plows and controlling the depth to which they will run in the ground.
In the drawings, A is the central or main bam of the cultivator, having the wheel or roller B, supported by lugs hanging from its forward end, and having the handles 0 O fixed to its rear end. Hinged to this beam at c c are two side beams, D D, each of which is capable of having its rear end thrown out from or closed in toward the beam A.
E is a cross-bar firmly attached to a sleeve or clasp, e, which slides back and forth on the beam A, and having attached to each end, on its under side, a similar clasp, e, which embraces the side beam, D or D. It is evident that by sliding the cross-bar forward or back on the beam A the side beams will be thrown out from the center beam or drawn in toward it to any required degree. The center beam is provided with a series of small holes, a a a, and apin, p, fastened to the cross-bar by a chain, 0, is used to confine the crossbar in any desired position.
A plow or cultivator-tooth, P, is attached in the usual manner at the rear end of the beams D D and A, as shown by the drawings.
which the plows will run in the ground, and
for enabling the whiffletree to be elevated out of the way of the young corn. This plate may be strengthened by braces G G, if desired.
The side beams may be pivoted to the ends of a cross-bar, H, attached to the under side of the beam A, if preferred, in which case the braces G G may extend from the upper edge of the plate F to the ends of bar Ha method of construction which, on the whole, is, perhaps, preferable to any other in the matter of strength and firmness.
The whole device is simple, and can be got up at a slight cost. It is strong, not liable to break or get out of order, and can be perfectly controlled and easily adjusted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The sliding bar E, in combination with the central beam, A, the hinged side beams, D D, and the fastening p, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The arrangement of the beams A D D, slide E, clevis F, wheel B, handles 0 O, and plows or teeth P P l, in the manner shown and described.
To the above specification of my improvement I have signed my hand this 10th day of August, 1868.
DANIEL S. EARLY.
