Description
- 1." N. DAVISON & N. SPENCER, J r.
Gang Plow.
Patented 'Nov. 3. 1868.
a a Q I fimtml ttatee gaunt fittin at Letters PatentNo. 83,698, dated November 3, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-FLOWS- The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J ASPER N. DAVISON and NAAMAN SPENCER, J r., of Buffalo, in the county of Ogle, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gang-Plows; and we do here by declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view;
Figure ,2 is a front elevation; and
Figure 3,'a side elevation.
The same letters in all the figures are used to indicate the same parts. v
A A are plows, attached to beams B, having their support on a platform, O, which is hinged to the axle of the plow, carried upon two wheels. The platform is adjustably attached to the axle by means of a plate, D, having a series of holes, so that the plows may be Set horizontally, or inclined toone side, as desired. The lever E is pivoted to the tongue, and is formed with a cam on its lower end, which rests upon the platform.
The tongue,-when the plows are at work, is flexible, but when the lever E is drawn back, a rigid connection is formed between the tongue and platform 0, and the plows are raised out of the ground. The lever F is used to regulate the depth of the out; it is pivoted to the end of the platform, and has'a cam on its side, which rests upon the axle H, forming a fulcrum, by means of which the-plows may be raised or lowered, the spring-catch G holding them at any desired depth. The catch works into notches in the plate I, which is :bolted to the platform, and is extended downwards with a slot or guide, for the axle H to play vertically therein.
The tongue K is bolted to one of the plow-beams,
or to the platform. It is on the side of the horses, the double-tree M being hooked to the front edge of the platform. K is a brace, for giving staunchness tothe tongue, and L, a; guide, in which it oscillates freely.
- Rods N N are fastened to the plow-beams, and support the drivers seat 0, thereon, in such position that, by throwing back the seat, the weight of the driver will press the plows more deeply into the ground, for plowing in hard ground; and in soft ground, by drawing the seat forward, the weight will be taken oil" from the plows.
-What weclaim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The combination of the plows, the beams, the adjustable platform, the lever E, and the tongue, so arranged that the tongue shall be flexible when the. plows are at work, and only stifi" when used to carry the plows above the ground, the depth of the out being independently regulated, substantially in the manner set forth.
2. The combination of the plows, the beams, the platform, and axle, with the braces N and sliding seat 0, arranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names 1 to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. JASPER N. DAWSON.
NAAMAN SPENCER, JR.
