Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom) it concern:
Be it known that I, :EDWARD F. KUNATH, a citizen of the United States, residing in J ersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, of which the following is aspecification. This inventi n relates to the accent-key 1o mechanism in which the ribbon is caused to vibrate at each type-stroke to cover nd uncover the rinting-point. In such achines the ribon-vibrator is 0 erated in the usual manner by a universa bar, and the latter is 0 erated, as usual, by all the type-keys, inclu ing the accent-type keys;
but each of the latter controls means for preventing the carriage from being fed by the operation of the uni- 2 versal bar, whereby it becomes practicable by striking one or more accent-keys before the ordinary type-key to secure the pro er register of the accent or accents above or elow the letter upon the written sheet.
In carrying out my resent improvements 1 provide upon the universal bar of the wellknown Underwood type-writing machine a trip which under normal conditions serves to transmit movement from the universal 3 bar to the usual carria e-feeding mechanism, the'latter being rovi ed with an abutment which is engage by said trip. To the accent key or keys, however, I connect means for intercepting said trip and causing it to swing to ineffective position, so that the universal bar is rendered incapable of moving the carriage-feeding mechanism out ofnormal position, and hence of the accent key or ke s no feeding of the carriage is effected, although the ribbon is vibrated, as usual, by the universal bar.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a pcrs ective view of my improvements as applie to a universal bar and accent-type key in an Underwood front-strokewritingmachine. Fi .2 is a plan showing the trip on the universal ar-as swung to an inoperative position and also illustrating how the trip may be controlled by any of a plurality of accent-type keys.
An accent-type 1 is fixed-upon a type-bar 2, mounted u on a fulcrum-rod 3-and engaged by a bel -crank '4, the latter pivoted to a lever5, having 'of those type-writing machines 3 an accent-key 6 and pivoted at its rear end at 7. The levers and bellcranks for the ordinary types are indicated at 8 and 9, respectively. A depressionof the bell-crank forwardly, the type-bar rearwardly, through a ribbon 10'against a platen. (Not shown.) Each of the series of ty e-bars hasa heel 11, which strikes a curve universal bar' 12 and moves the same rearwardly, the universal bar being fixed upon a horizontaltable or frame 13, which in said machine is suitably guided for rearward and forward move ments. Upon said table 13 is usually fixed a slotted actuator 14, which engages a wrist 15, provided upon a short arm 16 of a lever 17, whereby the thereby throwing the type striking the front side of and down a vibrator 18, through which 18 threaded the ribbon 10. The ribbon is vibrated at the actuation of all the type-keys, including the accent-key.
