' a citizen of theUnited States, residing in "Derry, in the county of Rockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Writing Machines, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tabulatingmechanism of typewriting machines, and provides improved means to utilize certain of the character keys for operating and controlling the tabulating mechanism, thereby obviating the necessity of separate or additional keys for operating the. tabulating mechanism.
The invention is particularly adapted for tabulating mechanism of the class in which a series of key actuated denominational stopsare selectively positioned by the keys, the latter also-operating to release the car riage, and permit it to run forward to a position determined by the selected stop.
In accordance with the invention, certain of the character keys, preferably the numeral keys, may be depressed in the usual manner for printing, and may also have a separate or independent operation as, for example, a rearward movement for controlling and actuating the tabulator mechanism without printing. For tabulatingpurposes, each'key lever of the numeral keys may be formed with a joint at its forward end to permit a rearward swinging movement of the key-carrying portion of the key lever, separatefrom its. usual downward movement. This rearward movement of the keys may be transmitted through suitable connections to actuate the. denominational jstops. Such connections may comprise depending arms or extensions of the keys, connected through rearwardly extending links to a set ,of'sub-levers of thefirst order,
the latter connected through a second set of links to denominational stop levers, also of the first order. Each stop lever comprises a stop which, when the connected key is moved rearwardly, is thrown forwardinto the path of a column-stop on the carriage, and also operates through the usual mechanism to release the carriage and permit it to run forward and be arrested at the column, and denominational position'in the column, determined by said stops. The sub-levers between the stop-levers and the keys may be located behind their respective keys and arranged to swing in substantially the same vertical -plane,the set of links between the sub-levers and stop-levers 'converging toward the latter.

The machine frame comprises a base 1, corner-posts 2 erected thereon", and a top plate 3 surmounting the-posts. The character keys may be arranged in tiers as usual,
and comprise alphabet keys 4:,and a row of numeral keysfo, the latter serving also as tabulator keys to selectively. control the denominationalstops. The key levers are connected through inks fiztotype-bars 7 fulcrumed at 8, to swing rearwardly' andupwardly against the'underface of theplaten,
9, arranged over the types. The platen frame 10 has a front roll 11 running upon track 12, and is hinged in rear to a vibrating frame 13, which is hinged to a carriage 14.
Upon the carriage is a frame 15 hinged at 16, which carries a rack 17 to run in mesh with an underlying pinion 18, the latter connected to an escapement wheel 19. The escapement wheel is controlled by a feeding dog 20 and a detent dog 21, both carried upon a dog rocker 22 pivoted at 23, said rocker comprising. a forwardly extending frame 24 connected through links 25 to a universal bar 26, underlying the key levers. The carriage may be driven by a spring drum 27 connected as usual through a strap to the carriage, the forward movement of the carriag being controlled by the dogs 20 and 21, actuated by the depression of. any character key of the space key 28. Columnstops 29 are adjustable to any desired columnar position along a stop rack 30 mounted on the carriage and extending in the direction of the carriage travel. Denomination stops 31 arranged at letter-space intervals, are formed upon the upper ends of vertical levers 32, of the first order, pivoted at 33, to the machine frame. The lower ends of the levers 32 are connected through forwardly extending links 34 to the upper ends of the upright levers 35 also of the first order, mounted on a fulcrum rod 36 extending transversely of the machine. The set of links 34' are forwardly divergent or fanned out for connection at their forward ends to their respective levers 35, the latter spaced to correspond with the spacing of the keys 5. The lower ends of the levers 35 lie .close to the corresponding key levers, and are connected through forwardly extending links 37 to depending arms 38 formed on the key-carrying sections 39 of the numeral key levers 40. The links 37 have an adjustable connection with the keys, formed by threading the links into nuts 56, the latter pivoted at 57 to the depending arms 38. I The levers 35 may be suitably spaced by sleeves 41 on the rod 36.
The key sections 39 are pivoted at 42 to their levers 40. Each key section 39 may comprise a yoke portion 43, which straddles a lever 40 and has a limited tilting move ment thereon about thepivot 42. The sec- ;tion 39 is normally held at the limit of its forward tilting movement, determined by a stop 44 in the formof an off-set formed on the lever 40, so that the section 39 is normally substantially vertical. The rearward tilting of said section is limited by the rearward end 45 of the yoke portion striking the upper face of the lever 40, as indicated in Fig. 2.
. When a numeral key 5 is depressed it swings with its lever 40 about the fulcrum 40 and the link 37 swings about its point of connection with the lever 35 to the dotted-line position, Fig. 1, which has no material effect on the denomination stop. By swinging the key 5 rearwardly, about its fulcrum 42, the link 37 is drawn forward and actuates the lever 35, link 34 and stop lever 32, to throw the denomination stop 31 forward into the path of a column-stop 29, Fig. 2. This movement of the stop lever operates to release the carriage from its escapement mechanism by throwing forward a universal bar 46. form' art of a frame 47, which is thereby rocked about its fulcrum 48 and swings a releasing lever 49 about its fulcrum 50. The forward end of the lever 49 underlies the carriage rack 17 so that said movement of the releasing lever lifts the rack out of mesh with the pinion 18, and permits the carriage to run forward until arrested by the stop 29 striking the operated denomination stop 31.
The releasing lever 49 is provided with a depending lug 55, which moves downwardly in front of a projecting'lug on the dog 21, and locks the rocker 22, thereby preventing any of the character keys or the space key from being operated until the denomination stop has been returned to inactive position.
The carriage may be prevented from rebounding when it strikes a stop by means of latches 51, on the column-stops, and the denomination stops may be held in operative position by spring teeth 52, until released by the column-stops, as fully set forth in the patent to Barron, above referred to.
The denomination stops are returned to inoperative position by springs 53 which also serve to normally hold the keys 5 in their forward position. A universal bar 54 may overlie the key levers 40, and prevent them from being lifted above normal position when the keys 5 are swung rearwardly to operate the tabulating mechanism.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting' machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination with a carriage, a platen thereon, and types to strike against the platen, of character keys, operating connections between the keys and types for actuating the latter by downward movements of the keys, denomination stops, individual connections between the 'keys and said stops, the keys each operable through its said connection by a movement different from its key-operating movement, to operate the connected stop to carriage-arresting position, and means operated by said keys to release the carriage means to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the movement of the carriage, character keys, types operated thereby to strike against the platen or a work-sheet thereon, column stops on the carriage, denomination stops, and individualconnections from said keys to the denomination stops whereby the stops are individually controlled by said character keys and operated by the keys when the-latter aremoved in one direction, to releasethe carriage from the escapement mechanism and to arrest the carriage at a position determined by the operated stop, said keys operable when moved in a different direction to actuate the type-bars without operating the tabulating mechanism.
3. In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination with a carriage, of a platen, means to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the travel of the carriage, character keys comprising alphabet keys, and a row of numeral keys, types operated by a downward movement of said keys, said numeral keys movable in a direction transverse to said downward movement without operating the types, a series of denomination stops, individual connections between said stops and numeral keys for actuating the stops when the keys are moved transversely, and means operated by said transverse movement of the numeral keys to release the carriage from its eseapement mechanism, and permit it to be advanced to a position corresponding to the actuated denomination stop.
4. In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination of akeyboard comprising a row of keys extending transversely across themachine, a carriage, a platen thereon, types operated by said keys when the latter are depressed, to print at the platen, escapement mechanism controlling the travel of the carriage, a series of denomination stops located at the rear of the machine and arranged at letter-space intervals. said keys movable rearwardly, individual connections from said keys to the denomination stops arranged to actuate each stop by the rearward movement of the connected key, and means operable when said keys are moved rearwardly to release the carriage from its escapement mechanism, and permit it to run forward to a denominational position determined by the operated stop.
5. In a typewriting machine and tabu-' lating mechanism therefor, the combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of means to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the movement of the carriage, a keyboard comprising a row of keys extending across the machine, types operable by depressing the keys, a series of denomination stop levers and stops at the rear of the machine and arranged at letterspace intervals, sub-levers located forward of the said stop levers and spaced to correspond with the spacing of the said keys, said keys being capable of forward and rearward movement, links. connecting said keys to the sub-levers, links connecting the sublevers to the stop levers for actuating the latter when said keys are moved rearwardly, and means Controlled by said keys for releasing the carriage from its escapement mechanism when a key is moved rearwardly and permitting the carriage to run forward until arrested by the operated denomination stop. 4
6. In a. 'typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination of character keys and types operated thereby for printing when the keys are moved in one direction, said keys arranged to be movable in a different direction, a series of tabulator stops, and individual con nections from the stops to the said keys'arranged to selectively operate the stops when said keys are moved in said different direction.
7. In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination with character keys, said keys movable downwardly from normal position for operating types to print, of a series of tabulator stops, and individual operating connections between the stops and said keys, the latter movable in a direction transverse to said downward movement for actuating said stops without printing.
8. In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination with key levers extending forwardly from their fulcrums, saidlevers comprising jointed keycarrying sections at their forward ends, of types operated by said key levers when the keys are depressed, said key-carrying sections movable rearwardly without operating the levers about their said fulcrums, a series of tabulator stops, and individual connections between said stops and said sections for selectively actuating the stops when the keys are moved rearwardly.
9. In a typewriting machine and taulating mechanism therefor, the combination with key levers extending forwardly from their fulcrums, said levers comprising j ointed key-carrying sections at their forward ends, of types operated by said key levers when the keys are depressed, said key-carry- -55 about their points of connection with the scribed, the combination with key levers having pivoted key-carrying sections, types, and keys operable when depressed to actuate the types for printing, of a series of tabu-' lator stops, vertically-disposed levers carrymg said stops and located behind said keys, vertically-disposed sub-levers intermediate the stop-carrying levers and said keys, said key-carrying sections comprising arms extending below their pivots, links connecting said arms with the sub-levers and movable forwardly by the rearward movement of the 7 keys for actuating the sub-levers, links connecting the sub-levers with the stop-carrying levcrs for actuating the latter, said firstmentioned links arranged to swing about their points of connection with the sub-"- levers when the keys are depressed for printing without operating the sub-levers and tabulator stops.
11. The combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of types to print at the platen, key levers to operate the types, keys on said levers operable when depressed to operate said levers and therebycause the types to print, said keys movable forwardly and rearwardly without swinging said levers, a series of vertically-disposed ta'bulator stop levers in rear of said keys, and comprising stops movable into position to arrest the carriage, sub-levers intermediate said keys and stop levers and comprising arms extending above their fulcrums, links connecting said arms with the stop levers, said sub-levers having depending arms, links I connecting said depending arms to the keys below their pivots, said last-named links having a forward movement imparted thereto by a rearward movement of the keys to swing the sub-levers and actuate the stop levers, said. keys when depressed for printing, swinging said last-named links idly sub-levers, whereby the keys may be moved rearwardly to selectively operate the tabulator stops without printing, and whereby the keys may be moved downward to print without affecting the tabulator stops.
12. In a typewriting machine having tabulating mechanism, the combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of means to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the, letter-feed travel of the carriage, character keys, types operatedthereby to print at the platen, a set of stops, means to connect the keys to said stops for positioning the latter to arrest the carriage, said connecting means comprising permanently operative individual connections between each key and its stop, whereby each key is operableindependently of other means to actuate is connected stop, and means operated by said keys to release the carriage from the escapement mechanism.
13. In a typewriting machine comprising tabulating mechanism, the combination with a carriage and a platen thereon, of means to drive the carriage, escapement mechanism controlling the movement of the carriage, character keys, types operated thereby to print at the platen, denomination stops, means whereby said stops are individually controlled and operated by the character keys, said means comprising a permanently operative connection from each key to a denomination stop, operative when a key is moved in one direction to set the connected stop, and means operated by said; stop-setting movement of the key to release the carriage from the escapement mechanism, whereby the carriage is permitted to run forward and is arrested at a position de termined by the actuated stop, said keys operable when moved in a difierent direction to actuate the type-bars without operating the tabulating mechanism.
14. In a typewriting machine and tabulating mechanism therefor, the combination of character keys, types operated thereby for printing when the keys are movedin one direction, said keys arranged to be movable in a different direction, a series of stops, and
permanently operative individual connections from the stops tos'aid keys, each of said connections arranged to operate a stop whenever the connected key is moved in said different direction.
