Be it known that I, SAMUEL AYnEs, of Danville,in the county of Boyle, and State of Kentucky, have1 invented a new and improved Pencil-Sheath or Holder; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear,l land exact descriptionthereof, which will enable others skilledin the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming part of` this specification.

Figure 1 is a rear view of my improved holder, lthe tube being removed.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal central section of the same, taken through the line :c ay, ig. 3,*the tube being attached, and showing a pencil in place.

My invention has for its object to furnish a neat, simple,vand convenient device, by means of which a pencil Amay be safely heid in such a position as tobe always at hand ready for use; and it consists in the cinstruction and 'combination` of the various parts, as hereinafter more fully described.

A is the sheath or holder, which is made somewhat in the shape of a short trumpet or funnel-shaped tube, somewhat attened, and having an angular piece cut out of the upper part of'its front side, as shown in dotted lines in iig. 1. To the rear side of the holder A is attached a pin, B, in the same manner as the pin is attached to .a ladys'breast-pin.

C is a spring, the upper end of which is attached to the`upper part of the rear sideof the holder A, and to the lower or free end of which is pivoted aconcave roller, D, which projects through a slot or hole in the rear side of said holder, so as to rest and press against the pencil when in place, and prevent it from working or being pushed out. l

E are wings attached to the holder A, and having eyelet-holes or openings through them, so that the holdermay be aewed fast t'o the garment upon which it is worn. The wings E may be a plate, as shown in the drawings, or they may be made of wire or other framework. l

When the wings E are used, the pin B may or may not be attached to the holder Afas may be desired.

F- is a stop attached to the pencil, to prevent the said pencil from being pnsheddown too far in the holder, as shown in g.- 2. The stop F may be made of metal or other suitable material, and it may be stationary or adjustable, as may be desired.

G is a tube attached to the lower end of the holder A, to protect the point of thepencil. The tube Gmay be attached to the holder A by spring-hooks g1, or it may be screwed upon the lower end of said holder, or secured in place in any other convenient manner.' In the lower end of the tube Gr is placed a. false bottom or diaphragm, g2, having a hole through its centre to receive the point of the pencil and prevent it from being accidentally broken o. The tube G may he made in two parts sliding upon each other, and secured in plac'e, when adjusted to the proper length, by .a bayonet-catch, as shown in gs. 2 and 3, or, if desired, it maybe made .in one piece, without the extension-adjustment. The pencil-holder may bel attached to the vest near the Watchpocket, or it may be attached to the .inner side of the breast of the, coat, or in any other convenient position.

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the slotted funnel-shaped -holder A, spring C, and friction-roller D, the'perforated wings E, andthe adjustable protecting-tube G, having the perforated diaphragm g2, all constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose specified. i

2. In' combination with the slotted funnel-shaped holder A, roller D, and protecting-tube G, the adjustable stop F upon the pencil, asherein described, for the purpose specified.
