Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,857, dated September 1, 1863.

[0 all whom it may concern: 7 Be it known that I, W. B. WINTON, ofMarion, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my garden-plow.

The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a curved serrated metal bar or plate, in combination with a pivoted plow-beam, to which the shovel is attached, all arranged and operating substantially in the manner hereinafter described.

To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawing, A A represent the handles, which are made to extend ..trom the point where they are connected together at their inner ends or portions (marked as) a suitable distance out therefrom,and there connected by a bolt, upon which the wheel 13 is situated.

O designates a plow-beam, which is pivoted at the point where the inner portions of the handles AA are connected together by another bolt or pin,and supplied at its lower end with the shovel a.

D represents a curved metal bar or plate secured at one end to the pivoted beam (J, and provided at its top, and a suitable distance on its surface therefrom,with serrations, which engage with a metal plate or catch, (1, secured directlyin rear of the wheel B, or as seen in Fig. 1. This plate or bar is designed to be made of spring metal, so as to give it sufficient spring to cause it to catch on the plate or catch d, and thus permit of its being placed at the desired point, raising or loweringthe beam, with its shove-l, when required.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The curved serrated sprin g-metal bar or plate D, in combination with the pivoted plow-beam O, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
