Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Z. w. LEE, or BLAKELY, GEORGIA.
||v|PRovEM ENT IN PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,341, dated August 2l, 1866.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Z. VJLEE, of Blakely, in the county of Early and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Plows, and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the nature, construction, and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, which are made a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, of a plow illustrating mv invention.
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists in novel devices for attaching the plow-shanks to the beam and for adjusting the same in order to vary the working position of the plows.
In the ensuingdescription these devices are described in connection with a plow; but they are applicable to cultivators, as the shovelshanks of the latter require a similar adjustment to those of a plow.
The following description will enable others skilled-in the art to which my said invention appertains to fully understand and use the same.
In the accompanying drawings, A may represent the beam, B B the handles, which are bolted to the beam, and G the upright post, which joins the rear end of the beam to the transverse bar D, which connects the handles together'.
E E E represent the plow-Shanks, which consist each of a single bar bent in the form of a U, so as to have two parallel sides with an intervening space. The plows are designed to be attached to these shanks after the manner described in a paten t granted E. D; and Z. W. Lee on the 4th day of October, 1859.
The upper end of each of the shanksE embraces a bracket, F, which is fastened to the beam A by means of the shackles Gr and wedges H. The-shank E is pivoted to the bracket F by a bolt or pivot, I.
J represents an arm, pivoted to the shank E at the joint e, which is below the point at which the shank is attached to the bracket F. The upper edge of the arm J is formed with a small lin or projection, j, which, by engaging with the serrations on the under side of the bracket F, serve to stay the arm J in any -position to which it may be adjusted toward the front or rear, such adj ustment being effected by means ot' the shackle K and wedge L, which hold the arm J snugly up against the under side of the bracket, as represented. By thus adjusting the arm J toward the front or rear the inclination of the plow-shank E may be varied to any desired extent, and since the plows are made to work deeper or shallower in the soil, as occasion may require.
Any number of shanks maybe attached to the beam in the manner above described, and their number as well as their relative position is varied to suit the different varieties ot' plowing or cultivating.
The central shank, E', is attached by means of a pivot, M, and braced by means of the bar N,which is adjustable on the beam A; but as this forms no part of the present invention it need not be further alluded to.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination of the shank E, bracket F, pivoted arm J, shackle K, and wedge L, all
arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein explained.
Z. W. LEE.
