VEHICLE-BODY CONSTRUCTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENocH DEMSKY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in V ehicle Body Construction, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to a vehicle-body con struction; and the object of my invention is to provide means for very rigidly securing the panels of a vehicle-body to the body-frame.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the panels may be very quickly and efficiently curved into either concave or convex form and to fasten these curved panels to the vehicle-body.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, that will be hereinafter more fully shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aperspective view of the side panel of a buggy, which panel is fitted and provided with the devices for securing it to the buggy-frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of abuggy-frame to which the panel seen in Fig. 1 is to be attached. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a portion of a vehiclepanel, the same being made in convex form, as contemplated by my invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of a vehiclepanel made into concave form, as contemplated by my invention. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical section taken approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1, a portion of the vehicle-frame being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 6 is an enlarged horizontal section taken ap proximately on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5 and showing the panel fixed to one of the posts or pillars of a vehicle-body frame.
The following detailed description of my invention refers to the construction shown in the drawings-viz., a buggybut it will be readily understood that my improvement is applicable for use in all forms of vehiclebodies' and railway-coaches.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 1 1 indicate the side rails of a buggy-body frame, 2 the corner posts or pillars thereof, and 3 the seat posts or pillars. Formed transversely through the rails 1 and posts 2 and 3 at suitable distances apart are the bolt-holes 4.
5 indicates the side panel of a buggy-body,
which is provided in its inner face with a series of vertically-arranged dovetail grooves 6, the same being so arranged to coincide with the corner-posts 2 and seat-posts 3. Adapted to fit snugly within these grooves 6 are dovetail strips 7, of either hard wood or metal or any other suitable material, and passing through said strips are the bolts 8, having countersunk heads 9. The outer ends 10 of these bolts are screw-threaded and adapted to receive conical nuts 11, that are provided in their outer faces with slots to receive the point of a screw-driver or similar tool. These bolts 8 are so arranged in the strips 7 as that when the panel is positioned against the side of the body-frame the bolts will pass through the bolt-holes 4 in the corner-posts 2 and seat-posts 3. Dovetail blocks 12 are let into corresponding dovetail recesses 13, formed along the lower edge of the panel 5, from which blocks project bolts 14, in every way similar to the bolts 8, and which bolts 14 are so positioned as to pass through the bolt holes or apertures 4 in the side rails 1 of the body-frame.
The inner ends of all of the bolt-holes 4 are reamed out, as indicated by 15 in Fig. 6, and when the bolts 8 are passed through their corresponding holes and the nuts 11 are located upon the screw-threaded ends of said bolts said nuts will be countersunk in the reamedout ends of said bolt-holes.
This construction permits ofthe panels of a vehicle to be quickly and very rigidly positioned without the use of nails or plugs, and there are no screw or bolt heads on the exterior surfaces of the panels, and therefore said panels can be finished so as to present a very much neater appearance than where the surface is broken with screw or bolt 1". eads.
It will be readily understood that by curving the strips 7 a corresponding curve can be given to the panel in which said curved strips are seated, thus providing concave or convex panels for a vehicle-body.
The panels of a vehicle-body are usually constructed of thin pieces of wood, and therefore they can be readily curved and fitted with curved strips of hard wood, aluminium, or a similar material.
A vehicle-body constructed in accordance with my invention can be very readily as sembled or taken apart, is very strong and substantial, and is capable of being very neatly trimmed and finished.
It will be understood that in all ordinary buggy and carriage construction perfectly straight panels and straight strips are made use of, it being only necessary to use curved panels in such vehicles as surries, coups, victorias, &c.
I claim 1. The combination with a vehicle-body frame, having suitably located apertures therein of panels adapted to fit on certain parts of the frame, there being dovetail grooves formed in the inner faces of said panels; strips detachably seated in said dovetail grooves, and bolts carried by said strips that pass through the apertures in the frame, substantially as specified.
2. In avehicle-body construction, the combination with a vehicle-body frame, through certain parts of which are formed suitably- ENOCH DEMSKY.
