Description

C. F. BOSWORTH, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 81,246, dated August I8, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT INATTGHING WIRES 'I'O BRIMS OF HATS. i
digedgitnlt munt tu in time ttttrs @nient mit mating ont uf tige time.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
v Be it known that I, C. F. BosWOYRTH, ot' Milford, in the county of New Haven, und State of Connecticut, have invented a. new Improvement in Wiring Hat-Briuis; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, und represent, in -l Fignre l, an upper side view of a. portion of the brim of a, hat,A Figure 2 an under side view, and in Figure 3 the manner of attaching the wire. The object of this invention is to so attach the wire to the brim that it muy be secured thereon by a.- com mon sewing-machine, and the invention consists in securing the wire to hat-brims by a continuous line of stitches, alternatestitches passing over'the wire in opposite directions, the needle passing down in a, path indicated by the centre of the wire, the line of stitches corresponding to such path. l
In order to the clear understanding of my invention, I will fully describe the same as illustra-ted in the accompanying drawings.
As in iig. 3, the wire is placed upon the under side and near the edge of the brim, and in an ordinary sewing-jnuchine the wire is moved, first, to the left, as denoted in black, so tliaft the needle will pass down to the right of the Wire; then, when the stitch is formed and the needle returned, carry the wire over to the right, as denoted inblue, and the needlen'ill pass down upon the -left or opposite side of the Wire, in the suine path or lineas the first stitch, and so continuing, alternately moving the wire to the right and left, so that, while the stitches areformed in the same path, they alternately cross over the njire, as denoted in fig. 2, the line of stitches upon the opposite side of the b rim being as un ordinary senin, as denoted in fig. 1.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming the securing of wire to hat-brilns by ineans of o. sewing-machine or by an over-aud-over stitch by hand. v
Having lthus fully described my inventiolnywhat I claim as new and useful,`and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Attaching the wire to hat-brims by a continuous or direct line of stitches parallel with the wire, the said stitches alternately crossing the Wire, so as to secure the wire to the brim, substantially in the manner specified.
