Description
` PATBNTED FEB. 13, 1906.
T. I. SWAGERTY. BROOM HANDLE.
THOMAS I. SWVAGERTY, OF PLEASANTON, KANSAS.
BROOM-HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent..
Patented Feb. 13, 1906.
Application filed June 9, 1905. Serial NO- 264.463-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS I. SWAGERTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pleasanton, in the county of Linn and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Handles, of Which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brooms, and more particularly to a handle for same which is made removable, so as to be used repeatedly and so that the broom can be packed in a minimum space for transportation or storage.
It consists, essentially, of a handle provided at one end With a threaded projection and of a broom portion the head of Which is provided with a recess adapted to receive the threaded projection.
It has for its ob 'ect to produce a broomhandle Which can be easily and quickly attached and detached, Which will be simple and durable in construction, and Which can be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are vertical longitudinal sectional views of the broom, taken at right angles to each other.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in both the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The numeral 1 designates the handle, one end of which has the shank of a threaded pin 2 embedded therein and is inclosed in a metallic casing 3, which extends beyond the extremity of the handle and is flared outwardly at 4, so as to fit snugly around the head of the broom. The threaded pin 2 is held securely against either longitudinal or rotary movements by means of a key 5, driven transversely through an opening in the shank thereof. The casing may be held in position' by any suitable means. The wooden shank 6, about which the broom-Corn forming the brush is fastened, is provided With a longitudinal recess 7 for the reception of the threaded pin 2. A metal keeper 8 is driven into the shank 6 transversely, so as to intersect this recess 7, and is provided at the intersection With a threaded opening 9 in alinement With said recess to cooperate with the pin 2. The handle will be effectively prevented from pulling away from the brush portion owing to the fact that the key 5 and the metal keeper 8 are both driven transversely and will not admit of any longitudinal movement. The metallic casing 3 also serves to reinforce the end of the handle against splitting.
In order to connect the handle to the brush portion, it is simply necessary to screw the pin 2 into the threaded opening 9. The flared casing 4 produces a guiding means for the reception of the shank 6 of the broom and the proper entry thereinto of the threaded projecting pin 2.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new is- As a new article of manufacture a broom comprising a handle provided at its lower end With .a threaded projecting pin and With a casing fiared outwardly and projecting beyond the end of the said pin, and a brush portion having at its upper end a shank formed With a longitudinally-extending recess and a keeper embedded in said shank and extending transversely across said recess and provided With a threaded aperture in line with the recess and designed for threaded engagement With the pin, the flared casing providing a guiding means for the reception of the said shank and a proper entry thereinto of the projecting pin, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS I. SWAGERTY.
