BROOM.
T5PECIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,059, dated May 20, 1884.
Application filed December 27, 1882.
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1, CHARLES DOUGLAS, of Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brooms; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a .part of this specification;
Figure l is a sectional view of the handlesocket detached from the broom, and Fig. 2 a central sectional view of a broom complete constructed according to my invention.
In said drawings, A designates the handle socket, having an annular exterior groove or recess, a, and tapered interiorly for the 'reception of the handle B, and is secured'to the broom-head D in any suitable manner. The broom-head D is preferably made of wood, and is hollowed out or recessed between its ends,for the purpose of forming aspace for the reception of a portion of the broomcorn.
(No model.)
E is a clamp,which is held securely against the head D by means of wires or fastenings E, whereby the interposed broom-corn between the head and clamp is held securely in place. A portion of the corn, which constitutes the outer portion of the broom proper, iscarried up around the head D and socket A, to which latter it is secured by means of a suitable wrapping of wire or twine.
It will be seen that the annular groove or recess a in the socket forms an important feature of my invention, as by its use the corn is held more securely to the socketthan it could be when a plain socket, such as shown in my patent above mentioned, is employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- The broom consisting of the combination, with the head and clamp constructed as shown, and secured together by means of wires or fastenings, of the handle-socket having an interior tapering orifice and an exterior annular groove, a removable handle adapted to be received in said socket, and the broom-straw, a portion of which is held between the head and clamp, and a portion thereof brought around the head and fastened about said socket by a suitable wrapping of wire or twine, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES DOUGLAS.
