IMPROVED LUBRIGATING-OIL.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. .KESTL'ER, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and-State of Illinois, have invented a certain new Composition for or Mode of Preparing Lubricating-Oils; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and-exact description of the mode of preparing such composition.
The nature of my invention or discovery consists in preparing a lubricating-oil from the residuum from the distillation of coal-oil or from crude petroleum, which will have a good wearing body, with sufiicient fluidity to make it applicable to machinery and axles. I
To enable others skilled in the art to manufacturemy improved lubricating-oil, I will now describe the process of making it. p I
To ten gallons of the article known as residuum, or of crude petroleum, the same'having first been heated to'nearly the boiling-point, I add one-half of one pound of saleratus or sal-soda, or one-fourth of one pound each, which I prefer, and alsoone-fourt-h ot'one pound of brimstone. I then boil the whole about five minutes, thoroughly mixing the several articles, after which the composition is placed in a suitable tankto cool, when all refuse goes to the bottom, and the lubricating-oil can then be drawn of or strained. After it has been drawnofl' or strained, I-add one-half of one gallon of kerosene.
The sal-so da and sal'eratus have the eflect of separating the tar from the oil; the brimstone is used to prevent the oil from heating when used; the kerosene or distilled coal-oil keeps my composition fluid-in cold weather.
Good lubricating-oil can b'emade, although the prop'ortionspf the articles used be somewhat varied from those given. I
Having thus fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The oil composed of the ingredients, and manufactured. as herein described.
