TO ALL WHOM IT MAY, CONGERN: V
Be it known that I, A.' FROST, of Seymour, in the county et' Jackson, and State of Indiana., have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting and Caring Apples; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure ill is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the slides, Yshowingthe operation thereof'.
The nature of my invention consists in the-.construction of a simple and cheap device for caring and cutting apples, which can be operated byrany child, almost, if desired.
In order to enable others skilled. in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a bedpiece,)vhieh is grooved out in its centre, to allow the sliding bars, B an'd'G, to move back and forth. g p
On the left end of the bed-piece A is a vertical piece, D, fastened, ,which extends a suitable distanceto the rear, and is-eut with a circular hole opposite the-centreof the bed-piece. This hole is provided with fourknives, a a, which radiate at right angles' from each other from a tube, by, 'which passes ithrough the centreof this hole, being secured in the rear of the board D to an angular bar, E, which is fastened tov said board. l
` 0n the sliding bar B is an upright rod,'c, to which is an annular disk, F, secured, the centre hole or opening of the said disk being about the size of vthe core of an apple'. On the sliding bar C is a similar upright rod, d, to which is secured a head, G, pointing directly against the end of the tube b, and to this head four knives, e e, are secured. v f
These'knives are made of any suitable material, and are provided at their front ends with projections and slots running into each other, as shown', and are further made to give, that isseparate, as far as may be necessary, tc completely core the apple. I v
` A lever, H, is connected to the rear end of the hoard D,'by means of ahook, f, and extends forward, under the head G, to the left oi' the rod d, and is pivoted on a pin, z', on the slide-B, to the right of the rod c, extending far enough'in front of thcbed-piece A to bc operatedfrom thatpsidei. V
The operation is as follows.: Y
Place the apple on the end ofl the tube b, then move the.lever H towards the boardD; this moves 'the slide B,'and also the slide C, bymeans of a catch, m, placed on 'the 'bottom of said slideC, which catches into a notch on thovslide B, as shown in iig. 2. f I
This moves Vthe knives c einto the apple,l completely cutting out the core of the same, and, as soon as the knives strike the end'c the tubeV 71,:a notch in the-groove of the bed-piece A throws the. catch m out from the notch in the slide B, allowingsaid slide to keep on vtowards the apple. The annular diskF then presses the apple against theknives a tz, cuttingit in four parts, the pieces dropping down on the outer sideof the board D, in a vessel'placed for their reception.
The lever H is then moved back, carrying the slide-B along with it, until the lever strikes the rod d, when the slide 4C also moves back to its originalpositon, ther catch mat the same tine'prssing in the notch on the slide B, ready for its next forward movement.
i Having thus fully dcscribedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to se'cure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The slide C, provided with rod cl, head G, and knivosee, in combination with the'tube b, in the centre of the circular hole on the board D, all constructed substantially as described, for the purpose of cutting the core ont of apples, as herein set forth. p y
2. The combination and arrangement ofI the groovcdbedpiece A, board D,`lever H, slidesB and C, knives a aand ce, and annulardisk F, all constructed as described, and operating substantially as'and for-the purposes herein set forth. l v ,Y i i Y l In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own,.I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' i A. FROST.`
