TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WARItnN LYON, ofthe city, county, and State of New. York, have invented a new and improved llb'Iachi'ne for Cutting Stubs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,reference being had to the accompanying drawings,- forming part et' this speoiication.
This invention relates to a new and improved machine for cutting rods into siriall pieces for conuectinglthe parts of iron railings together. These, pieces are technically termed stubs, and they are fitted in holes made in theends of the bars, and secured therein by setting7 or striking the metal ofthe bars so that it will rmly clinch or hold the rods or stubs, the'protruding ends or portions of the stubs passing through holes in the rails or adjoining bars, and riveted at their ends at the outer sides of the latter-named rails or bars, so as to form a rm connection.
The object of the invention is to obtain a simple, economical, and portable-device for the purpose specified, and one which may be operated with the greatest facility. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is -a side view of mylinvention.

A represents un upright plate of cast iron, and cast with a base, B, and C is a pinion, which is tted on a fixed axis, a, at the upper part of A, and is provided with a handle, D. To one side of the plate A there is secured by a pivot, I1, another plate, E, which is allowed to work ortui'n freely on the pivot t. On the upper end of the platciEithere is a segment-rack, F, which is a portion of a circle of which the pivot Z1 is the centre, and the pinion C gears into this rack. `(See igs. 1 and To the inner surfaces of the plates A E there are lirmly secured steel plates 'c d, which have' circular holes cK made through them to allow the rod to be passed through theni, corresponding holes c being made in the plates A E, (see Iig. 3,) the holes e being in line with the holes c* in the steel' plates c d when the plate E is in an upright position, and a pim-f, which projects from the inner side of' the plate E, is in contact with a projection7 g, on the'plate A. The plates c (Z serve as cutters, and out the rod, when the same is passed through the holes in the plates A E and c d, and the plate E' moved by turning the pinion C through the medium of the handle or lcvcr D. By this rack, pinion, and handle or lever, a considerable purchase or leverage power is obtained, and the rod eut with a very slight expenditure of power. The rod is cut into pieces or stubs7 of a greater or less uniform length, by means of an adjustable gauge composed of an arm, F", {itted on a pivot, L, which projects from a pendent plate, z', of a tube, j, the latter being fitted on a rod, k, which projects horizontally from the plate A, and is secured on said rod 7c by a setscrew, Zl The upper part of the arm Fx is kept in contact with a pin, m, which projects -from the plate z', by means of a spring, n, and the lower part ofthe arm FX, when the gauge is in use, is in line with the holes ct in the steel plates c d, and servos as a stop when the rod is passed through the holes inthe plates A E c al, the arm being adjusted nearer to or farther from plate A', according to the length required for the stubs, by adjusting the tubej on the rod 7c. The stubs are forced out from thc plates as they are cut, by shoving or feeding the rod through the same, the arm F yielding to allow the stubs to pass out, the spring n throwing the arm back to its proper position as soon as eachl stub drops from plate A. When the gauge is not required it muy be turned to one side of the holes in the plates by turning the tube j on its rod r. This device may be screwed or bolted to a bench or fixture, and will monopolize but very little room.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The operating of thc pivoted plate E, through the medium of the segment-raek F and pinion C, when said plate E has a cutting plate, c, attached, and is used in connection with a similar cutting plate, e7, on a fixed standard or plate, A, to which'the plate E is pivoted, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The combination of devices composing the gauge, arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
