SLIDING DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, JOHN S. ScHLossEn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of I-Iillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Sliding Door, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in doors of the sliding type; and it particularly embodies the novel construction of a track upon which the door-supporting rollers move, the object being to so arrange the parts that upon sliding the door toward opening posi tion it will be swung outward with relation to the building, car, or other structure to which it may be attached, thus preventing the scratching or marring of the surface of the building, car, or the like, and, further, to provide for a tight or close contact of the door against the building when in closed position.
I will. describe a sliding door embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of refer ence indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a slidingdoor mechanism embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the door in closed position. Fig. 3 is a top view showing the door in open position, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation with the door open.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the siding or wall portion of a building, car, or the like having a doorway 2, designed to be closed by a sliding door 8, from which hangers 4 5 extend upward, and these hangers are provided with rollers 6 7, which engage upon the upper edge of a track 8. The track is attached to the siding or wall structure by means of links 9 10, the said links being connected to the track near its ends. By this connection of the track it has a lengthwise movement in both directions and also has an inward and outward or lateral move ment, the object of which will hereinafter appear. Extended downward and then outward at a slight incline from the link 9 is a catch-plate 11, having at its end a downwardly-extended hook 12, designed to inter lock with the hook end 13 of a trip-lever 14, pivoted on the structure 1 and having at its end opposite the hook portion a block 15, which is rounded on its under side, this I of movement for opening.

secured to the outer side of the door near its lower end and adjacent to the edge. of the door in the direction of its opening movement. This block 19 is curved inward toward the edge of the door in the direction of its closing.
In the operation, assuming the door to be in closed position, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, upon sliding the door toward its opening position the hanger 4 will engage with the plate 11, which will cause a longitudinal and outward swinging movement of the track 8, and also move the hook portion 12 of the platell to the inner side of the hook end 13 of the trip-lever 14. Then as the cam-block 16 leaves the block '15 its weight will cause a swinging movement of the trip-lever, so as to engage the'hook portion 13 with the hook portion 12, thus holding the track in its out- Ward adjusted position. This movement of the track is practically coincident with the starting movement of the door, and the greater distance of the track fromthe struc ture 1 will carry the door away therefrom, therefore obviating the danger of scratching or otherwise marring the surface of the structure or wall. By moving the door to closing position the block 16 by engaging the block 15 will swing the triplever 14 out of engagement with the hook 12, and just before the door is entirely closed the hanger 4 by engaging with a pin 20 on the track 8 will cause a longitudinal and inward swinging of said track, causing the door to engage closely around the door opening or framing, and the door of course will be forced inward by the cam-block 19 engaging with the roller 18.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a sliding-door mechanism, a track mounted to swing lengthwise and laterally, adoor mounted to slide on the track, and means controlled by the sliding of the door to cause the outward and inward movements of the track, a latch-plate movable with the track and a swingin plate to hold t tion.
2. In a sliding-door mechanism, a track, link connections between said track and the structure having a door-openin the said link connections providing for a lengthwise movement of the track and also for inward and outward movement, a latch-plate connected to one of the links, a lever mounted to swing on the structure and havin a hook portion at one end for engaging wit said latchplate, and a weighted cam-block at the opposite end, a pin on the track, a door mounted to slide on the track, a cam on the upper end of said door for engaging with said weighted cam-block, and a part carried by the door for engaging with said pin for moving the track in one direction and for enga ing with the latch-plate for moving the traci in the opposite direction.
3. In a sliding-door mechanism, a track lever for engaging with said e track in its outermost posimounted to swing lengthwise and outward and inward, a door, hangers attached to the door, rollers supported by said hangers and engaging with the track, a pin extended outward from one end of the track and adapted to be engaged by one of the hangers, a latchplate carried bya part connected to the track, a lever having a portion for engaging with said latch-plate, a weighted cam-block on the end of said lever opposite the said engaging portion, a cam-block on the upper end of the doorfor engaging with said block on the lever, a roller supported at the lower end of the door, and a cam-block on the outer surface of the door for engaging with said roller.
