CAR RIDGE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1905.
Application filed September 28,1904. Serial No- 226,339.
To all whom, it rrtaiy concern.-
Be .it known that I, ABRUzzoIMIoHnLE, a
' citizen of Italy, residing at Pittsburg, in the :countyof Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefulIm-- proveme'nts in Cartridges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of-the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same, reference beinghad' 130 the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of'reference marked thereon. which form a part of this specification. i i
This invention relates to an. improved cartridge orf s'hell for firearms; and it consists in forming the projectile or bullet with a cir-' eumferential recess capable of containing a quantity of water or other liquid and a series of perforations through the casing of the shell closed by plugs. or stoppers adapted to be removed while the said projectile is-leaving the casing, permitting the fluid, to escape into the breech-chamber and the rifle-barrel, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central sectional elevation of a cartridge or "shell-constructed and arranged in accordance I with my invention, a .part'of said view being shown in outslde elevation. Fig. 2 1s an out closed at the rear, at the center of which is placed the percussion-cap 2. The projectile 3 consists of a cylindrical bodyportion having a circumferential groove 5 and conical point 3, and arranged in the open end of the casing 1 in a manner that will entirely cover said groove, as will be seen at Fig. -1 of the drawings. Formed in the casing 1 'and' com-. municating with the groove 5 are a series of s perforations each of which is fitted with a soft-metal plug 6, a portion of each of which projects beyond the external and internalsurv faces of the casing.
In operationa powder charge 4 is placed in the casing 1 and the projectile 3 seated therein.
A suitable liquid, such as'water or oil 7, isintro duced through .one or more .of the perforations, the plugs 6 being removed for this purpose and then replaced-when the compartment' formed by the recess 5 and shellhas been filled. 'Whenthe powder charge 4 is exploded, the forward movement of the projectile will strip the plugs' 6 from the perfo: rations, as shown in Fig. 4, forcing a'portion of the liquid through said perforations to cool thechamber in which the shell is confined-and carrying the remaining portion of the liquid to the rifle-barrel, thereby preventing overheating of the same.
Slight modifications and changes may be I made -in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore I do not wish to confine myself to the exact details shown and described.
'Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim, and desire to secure by-Let-ters 'Patent,is I 1 The herein-described cartridge or shell, comprising the casing 1, provided with a percussion-cap 2, the powder charge 4 and projectile 3 arranged therein, thecircumferential groove 5 formed about said projectile, the perforations fitted with soft-metal plugs 6 formed in said shell, said perforations being located with reference to the said groove 5 anda I suitable liquidplaced in said groove, all arranged and combined for-service, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABRUZZO MICHELE.
