CARTRIDGE-SHELL.

Be it known that I, LAWRENCE GREEN- WALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fair'play, in the countyof Grant and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Shells; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to shells or cartridge for use in ordinary common bored guns; and its object is to provide a device of this character having a shot-holder of novel form and arrangement which is adapted to hold the shot until the shell is ex loded and to then permit them to leave the fiolder.

Another object is to provide a shell which will cause the shot to remain while being shell ing.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a shell containing a cap and powder charge, such as usually employed, and within the outer portion of the shell is a cylindrical holder containing shot and which is closed at its outer end by a wad provided for that purpose. The inner end of the holder is open, but separated from the close together projected, thereby rendering the particularly effective in long-range fir- I powder charge by wads which serve to separate'the shot and powder.

The invention also consists of the further novel construction and combina ion of parts hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.

In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, partly in section, of my improved shell. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the shell. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the shot-holder.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a shell formed of paper or other suitable material and having a powder charge 2 within the inner end thereof. Wads 3 are located upon the powder charge, and abut- Specification of Letters Patent.

ting these wads is the open end of the cylindrical holder 4, filled with shot 5. This holder is preferably formed of paper, and its outer end is crimped, as at 6, to retain a wad 7 within the outer end of said holder and which serves to close the same. The entire holder is retained in place by crimping the shell, as shown at 8, and this end of the shell and the holder are preferably glued so as to hold them against displacement as a result of ordinary usage. I

When the shell, such as herein described, has exploded; the holder 4 is'projected, as is obvious, and after traveling a short distance turns around and permits the shot 5 to leave through its open end and continue onward in a compact mass. The shot will remain comparatively close at all times during their travel, and the shell is therefore particularly adapted for long-range firing. It will be understood, of course, that the holder 4, can be filled with any kind of shot.

In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention, and I do not limit myself thereto, as Iam aware that modification may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I therefore claim is new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination with a shell and an explosive charge therein, said shell being crimped at its open end; of a shot-holder crimped at one end and located within the shell, a wad within the holder and retained within the outer end thereof by the crimped portion of the holder, and a wad'interposed between the open end'of the holder and the explosive charge.
