Be it known that I, ROBERT THoRNnn, a citiren of the United States, residing at New Dorchester, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Hat-Pins, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

Hy invention is a non-removable hat-pin, having for its object the provision of means for yieldingly retaining it in locked position.

In carrying out my invention I provide a socket or holding device adapted to be secured to the side of the hat and containing a spring surrounding a central longitudinal passage through which the shaft of the pin operates, the latter having a lug adapted to enter said socket or holding device, within which it is securely held, upon a partial rotation by said spring.

Further constructional details of my invention and the operation thereof will be pointed out in the course of the following description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment thereof.

The pin a may be of any usual or preferred kind, being provided with a point a and a head (t2, the latter having any fanciful or ornamental shape, such as is commonly used to adorn hat-pins.

Surrounding the pin is a socket or holding device b, comprising alateral base or iiange L', having a plurality of holding devices of any suitable kind, (herein shown as consisting of holes, by which it may be stitched to the hat. Facing outwardly from said base is a cylindrical casing L2, having a partially-closed end b3 and retaining a washer or sliding block normally held forward by a spring b5. latter has a projecting lug a3, shown as a rectangular projection, although 1tl may have any other suitable shape, for entering the oil'- set 57, whereupon it engages the block and pushing the latter back, as shown in Fig. 4, it locks the pin effectually by being slightly rotated out of alinement with the offset The pin adjacent its point has a iiattened portion a* slightly larger than the opening bs in the holding device, so that the pin cannot be entirely removed from the hat.

In use the holding device is sewed or otherwise fastened to the outside of the hat, so that the head a2 of the pin projects outwardly and the point a projects within the hat. Thereupon the user, having placed her hat properly on her head, inserts the pin in her hair in usual manner until the lug a3 strikes against the holding device, whereupon a slight rotation of the pin brings the lug a3 into the slot or offset If, whereupon a further slight inward pressure of the pin causes said lug a3 to press the block b* forwardly sufliciently to permit the lug as to enter wholly within the socket or holding device. The user then rotates the pin slightly, whereupon the lug is automatically clamped by the spring-pressure between the block and the outer end b3 of the socket or holding device.

Many changes in specific details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, which I do' not limit otherwise than as eX- pressed in the claim.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A hollow socket-piece adapted to be secured to a hat, combined with a hat-pin having a pointed inner end, a headed outer end outside of the hat, and freely movable the greater portion of its length through said socket-piece, the latter being partially closed and laterally slotted at its outer end next to the head of the pin, a spring in said socket-piece, and a block between said spring and said partially-closed end, said hat-pin being freely rotatable in said block and socket, and having a lug next to said head for entering between said block and partially-closed end, pressing said block back against the spring and being frictionally clamped between said end and block.
