UNITED STATES PATENT @EETQE.
GUSTAVE MEINERS, OF HOBOKEN, NE\V JERSEY.
CUFF-BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,935,dated August lo, 1886.
Application filed June 3, 1886. Serial No. 203,995. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, Gusmvn MEINERS, of Hoboken, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Cuff-Button, of which the following specification is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a cuff-button so constructed that protuberances projecting beyond the head are crowded against the foot of the button. In this way the head and foot tightly bear against opposite sides of the cuff after the button is inserted, and prevent any objectionable looseness or rattling of the button.
The invention consists in the elements of improvement hereinafter more fully pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a bottom View of my improved button. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the foot removed; and Fig.3, a longitudinal central section, partlyin side view, of the same. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are similar views of a modification.
WVith particular reference to Figs. 1, 3, the letter a represents a hollow cap, that constitutes the head of the button, and has aturnedover flange, 1). Within the head a there is placed a loose plate, 0, which is free to move up or down within the head, and which is centrally perforated for the admission of the post d, securely fastened to the head. The outer or free end of post (1 carries a suitable foot, e. f is a spiral or other spring placed around post (1 within head a, and bearing against plate 0, so as to crowd said plate outward or against flange Z). The plate 0 is provided with outwardly-proj ecting protuberances g, or with a corresponding flange extending beyond flange b, and in close proximity to foot 6. In use the foot is slipped into the cud-hole, as usual, and during this operation the plate 0 will be partly crowded into head a, thus permitting the ready insertion of the button. After the button is in place the spring fwill throw the plate 0 outward, and hold the pro tuberances 9 against the outer face of the cuff, thus securely holding the button in place.
In the modifications shown in Figs. 4, 6, the post (I and foot 6 are made yielding, while the plate a is rigidly secured to the head a. In this modification the inner end of post dis not secured to head a, but is disconnected therefrom, and is attached to a loose plate, h, between which and plate 0 the springf is placed. It will be seen that by this construction the foot 0 may be drawn away from head a when the button is inserted.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of head a, post d, foot 6, and spring f, with a movable plate within head a, and with protuberances g projecting from back of head a toward foot 6, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of head a, having flange b,with post cl, foot e,spring f,and movable plate 0, having protuberances g, substantially as specified.
GUSTAV E MEINERS.
