Description

rzEnLANiE, or ADDISON, New. YORK.
Letters Patent No. 79,359, dated June 430, 1868,
IMPROVED MACHINE FOB DRESSING MILLSTONES.
dlgs tlgehnle mmh tu it ilgese tsttert tteut mit milling am mi its tame.
TO ALL WHOMIT 4MAY CONCERN:
-Be i't -knoivn that LAAZEL. LANE, of Addison, in the county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Millstone-Dressing Machines; andI do herebydeclarc that, the following is a full, clearpand exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in Which-- Figiire l .represents-a plan view of my improved machine. l
,Figure 2 represents an end view'of the same.
Y Similar letters of. reference indicate like parts.
Thenature of my 'invention relates to improvements'in machines for dressing millstones, whereby it is designed to provide a simple, cheap, and effective means for accomplishing the same. y A.lilitrveonssts in the. arrangement of a horizontal shaft, which forms the axle of the pick-handle, and which isfprovided with pinions `on each end, in a pair of`sliding-headhlocks, which arc caused to move back and forth on a. platform by means of the said pinions', which mesh into rack-bars, fixed' on the face of vtheplatforrn. '.lhe said bars also serve as guides for .the head-blocks, the motion being communicated to the said pinions by a hand-wheel on the end of the shaft, or by a worm-gear on a counter-shaft. as will be more fully described on reference to the accompanying drawings.
A represents a platform, provided with rack-bars B B, which are. formed so as to provide the dovetail grooves a a.
C C represent sliding blocks, which support the horizontal shaft C', on which latter the pick-handle D is pivoted. The shaft C is provided with the pinions E E, which gear into the rack-bars B B. The blocks C C are rigidly connected together by the rods b Z1. i
The shaft'is provided at one end with the hand-Wheel F, by which it may-be rotated, or a worm-wheel, G, provided with a crank, H, may be fixed to gear into the piniohs E forthe same purpose. n l
The pick-handle D-is arranged so as to slide loosely on the shaft C', and is operated to pick the stone, by the hand of the operator applied to the sha-nk of the pick. It is also moved from side to side on the shaft C bythe same hand, and at the same time that it is being worked to pick the stone, while by the other hand the shaft C may beV rotated to draw the pick over the face of the stone in the opposite direction to the line of traverse of the pick on the handle. p
The platform A may be made of iron or wood, and should be provided on the under side with rubber, or other similar material, that will not slip about on the face of the stone.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the platform A, provided with the rack-bars B, of the shaft C', provided with the sliding blocks C and pinions' F substantially as andfor the purpose set forth.
" AZEL LANE.
