TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. DORMAN, oi the city of Galesburg, in the county of Knox, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and useful Improvement 'in Slcighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of thesame, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the sleigh.
Figure 2 is a rear view.
Figure 3 is a bottom View.
Figure 4 is a view in detail of one of the cross-beams of the sleigh.
Like letters in the different figures of the drawings indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention consists in theconstruction and arrangement of a sleigh or sled of malleable iron and zinc, in such a manner that the sleigh may be readily taken apart and stowed away when the season of its use is over. 7
To enable any one skilled in the art to make and use my inventionfl will proceed to describe its construcion and operation.
A A are the runners, the concave form of which may be seen in figs. 2 and 3.
B B are posts cast with the runners, or their-ends may be made with flanges and bolted on to the runners, the bolts passing through the flanges and the runners, and secured by screw-nuts. The upper part of the posts are provided with sockets a a, (sec fig. 2,) which may be constructed in any desirable manner. The rear posts are made high enough to support the rear seat, and have sockets 6 hen the inner sides of them, about midway between the runners and the tops of them.
0 C are cross-beams, the ends of which may be bent at right or at obtuse angles to the beam, as may be desired, to suit the set or inclination of the posts from therunners. The rear beam C is made with sockets c c.
D is the reach for connecting the forward and rear runners together. It may be constructed in the manner seen in fig. 3, or in such manner as may be deemed necessary to suit any modification that may be made hereafter in the present plan of the sleigh.
The ends Z d of the reach are bent over at right angles to it. These ends and those of the beams, I term stems or flanges.
E is the body, the rear end of which has a tonguc,a, formed to fit-in a groove on the front plate of the seat.
.The sleigh is put together in the following manner:
The two forward runners are first coupled'by inserting the stems or flanges g9 of the beam into the sockets of the posts. They may then be secured therein by bolts and screw-nuts. The rear runners are next coupled by the beam in the same manner, except that the first beam is placed on the top of the posts, whilst this is placed a little below the top of the rear posts, to connect properly with the reach. The f'orwardand rear runners are then placed at the proper distance apart, and the reach fixed to connect them together, the stems and flanges 7t it of the same being inserted in the sockets on the beam.
The body is then put on top of the'reach, (see fig. 1,) and the reach and it secured tuthebeam of the forward runners by a king-bolt, (see fig. 3) passing through them, and secured on the under side of the: beam by a screw-nut;
The rear seat G, having flanges k 7:, is placed ontop of the posts, with the flanges in the sockets, which may be bolted to the posts. The flanges of the reach may also be bolted to the rear beam.
The tongue of the frontplate of the seat is thenslipped under the groove of the rear end of the body, and' fastened by screws or bolts.
The dashboard H is secured to the runners by their ends being slipped through sockets on the some, and I then bolted thereto.
As my plan of constructing a sleigh, so as to be taken apart and readily put together for use, is susceptible of Being modified to suit the purpose for which it may be intended, that is, a business or pleasure-sleigh, I contemplate nny equivalent plan therefor, as may be found desirable to accomplish the same Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of a sleigh or sled of mnlleable iron and zinc, substantially in themanner and for tlIG'PIIXPOSG as herein set forth. I J. P. DORMAN.
