IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHESTER HnaLn, of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and .useful Improvement in Sleighs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being h'ad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this Specification, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of my improved sleigh, the section being taken through the line a: x of fig. 2.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of sleighs, as will hereinafter be more fully setforth.
The runners, A, of the sleigh are of cast iron, and'are connected with the beams D D by means of curved steel knees a a b, which latter are fastened to the runners and to the cross-plates h h, aflixed to the cross-beams D D by bolts.
The ends-of the knees pass up through the cross-beams and the naves B of the sleigh, and are secured by nuts. i
The knees are united to the runners by casting the latter upon the knees. The curve of the knees, and the elastic character of the metal of which they are composed, enables them to yield, and thereby equalize the pressure of the load equally uponthe'runners.
The braking-device consists of the brake-rods c c, passing through the runners and naves of the sleigh, and are actuated up or down by means-of the handle c and arm d, which latter is aflixed to the brake-rod c by means of an eye and'pin, as shown.
A cross-rod or shafflj', ishung in staple-bearings gg, and connects the brake-rods of each'side with the handle e, as shown. i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A'wrought or malleable-iron sleigh-knee a a b, when welded to a cast-iron runner, so as to form braces, and to equalizev the weight of load on all parts of the runner, substantially as shown and described, in combination with a cross-beam plate, H, runners A, cross-beams D'D, all substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set' forth. CHESTER HEALD.
