PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES 1'). LOVELAGE, OF HEREFORD, TEXAS.
WINDOW OH DOOR FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,057, dated March '7, 1905.
Application filed June 30,1903. Serial No. 163,795.
To (all whom f may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. LOVE- LACE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hereford, in the county of Deaf Smith and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Window orDoor Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window-sash and door fasteners, and particularly to a fastener designed to be used in connection with a rack or its equivalent.
One of the principal objects of my invention is to provide a fastener capable of being manipulated by suitable devices whereby the sash can be locked or unlocked in a convenient manner.
Further objects and advantages, as well as the novel details of construction, will be specifically referred to hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary view of a portion of a sash and frame, showing the invention applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan. view of the fastener in its unlocked position, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the fastener in its locked position.
Referring now to the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 designates the lock-casing, which is provided with oppositely-disposed openings 2 and 3. A sliding bolt 4 is mounted in the casing, the engaging'end 5 of the bolt being formed to engage a rack or equivalent 6. The rear end of the bolt projects through the opening 3, and depending therefrom is a cord 7, adapted to be manipulated so as to retract the bolt, as will be explained hereinafter. A link 8 is pivoted to the casing at 8 at one end and intern'lediately of its ends to the bolt at'S and constitutes a part of the locking device for the bolt, being controlled by a torsion-spring 9, which is connected therewith and with the casing. The free end 8 of this link or lever extends beyond the bolt on one side and forms an abutment to be engaged by the ward of the locking member 10. The member 10 is rigid on a rockingshaft 11 and is provided with a'hook-shaped end .l2,'wh1eh can be rotated to engage with one side of the end 8 and hold the bolt in withdrawn position, and it can be moved out of contact with the projection 8 to permit the spring 9 to project the bolt into operative position, inv which position. it may be held b y moving the hooked end of the member 10 over the end 8 and into contact with the opposite side thereof.
It is contemplated to place the casing upon the movable member to which it is attached so that it will at all times be within easy reach of the operator, and in order to facilitate the operation a lever 13 is connected to the shaft 11 intermediately of its ends and carries terminally-depending cords 1-11 and 15, which can be alternately operated to throw the lock out of engagement with the lever to permit the spring 9 to project the bolt into operative position or to permit the retraction of said bolt through the medium of the cord 7.
A suitable rack or its equivalent will be disposed for engagement with the bolt end 5 to insure a perfect locking of the parts.
It will be apparent that the lock can be easily operated, and by the peculiar association of the parts the necessary result can be accomplished without uimecessarily multiplying the elements.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a fastener, the combination with a sliding bolt, of a spring-controlled device for moving the bolt in one direction and having an end projecting beyond the bolt and a means for engaging opposite sides of the projecting end to lock the bolt in the extreme limit of movement in either direction.
2. In a fastener, the combination with a sliding bolt, of a spring-control]ed pivoted actuating member connected to the bolt, and a device having an engaging hooked end for holding the bolt against the tension of the spring and for locking said bolt against movement in either direction.
3. In a fastener, the combination with a sliding bolt, of a link pivoted at one end to a supporting member and at an ii'itermed'ate point to said bolt with its free end extended beyond the bolt, a spring tttached at one end to the supporting member and at its other my own I have hereto afiixed my signature end to said link, and a locking member movin the presence of two Witnesses.
ably mounted adjacent said bolt and adapt- 1 1 ed to engage the free end of said link on its CHARLES LOVELACL' respective sides to lock the bolt against Vitnesses: movement. FREEMAN RUssELL MCCOY,
