N.PEYEHS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPNER wAsH NGTON D C UNITED STA'rns PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIAM B. SURDAM, OF FORT DODGE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-BLIND STOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,005, dated February 5, 1878; application filed September 10, 1877.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BIsHoP SUR- DAM, of Fort Dodge, county of Webster and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Blind Steps, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to blind-slat operating and looking devices, commonly termed blind-stops; and it consists in the combination with the blind-slats and their connecting-bars of pivoted levers arranged on the blind -firame and Operating-levers passing through the window-casing, as will be hereinafter fully explained.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a vertical section through a window-frame, showing the shutter open and my iuvention applied to it. Fig. 2 is a view of the window frame and blind, looking from the inside outward. Figs. 3 and 4 are details.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates a window-frame, and B the blind, which latter is provided with pivoted slats O, connected together by slat-bars D D in the usual well-known manner. These slat-bars are connected to levers E E by means of links F F, which may be constructed and applied as shown in Fig. 1, or they may be made as shown in Fig. 3, or in any other suitable manner.
The levers E E are pivoted at a, a to the panel of the blind, on the inside thereof, and the inner limbs of these levers extend slightly beyond the hinged side of the blind, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The drawing rcpresents the two levers E E connected to the blind by means of screws, With washers interposed between the heads thereof and the panel; but I do not limit my invention to this method of attaching the levers.
G G designate two levers, which are rccessed into one of the uprights of the window-frame, and which have their fulcra thereon.
The inner ends of the levers G have knobs g' applied to them, and the outer ends of these levers are bifurcated, and so arranged relatively to the inner ends of the levers E, that when the blind is shut these levers will engage with the levers G, thereby allowing a' person to adjust the blind-slats from the insid:ll of the room without raising the window- Safs It is obvious that the slats can` be opened and shut in the usual manner.
The Operating-levers G are provided with a slot, g, through which passes the fulcrunipin or screw h. By this means the aforesaid levers are capable of being moved longitudinally, for the purpose of enablin g the forked ends of the levers to be properly engaged with the levers E, which are mounted on the blind-frame and connected with the blindslats.
The forked and slotted Operating -levers passing through the window-casing are easily connected with the levers on the blind, in whatever position said levers may be in when the blind is closed, by simply withdrawing the forked levers so as to move the same beyond the blind-levers, when, by properly setting the forked levers and moving the same forward, they receive the ends of the blind-levers.
In order to lock the blind-slats or hold them in a closed position, I provide a wedgeshaped or triangular plate, J, which is driven edgewise into the window-casing in proper relation to the inner end of the forked operating-lever. Said lever being made of spring metal, it can readily be sprung over the top of the plate J, When it and the blind-slats are securely locked and prevented from being moved except by disengaging the lever G from the catch-plate, which can only be done from the inside of the house.
It is not essential that the looking device be combined with the upper series of the blind slats, it being sufficient when outside tampering with the closed lower slats is prevented. o
Having` thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1`. The combination of the levers G, provided with a forked inner end, and having a slot, g, and fulcrum-pin h, with the levers E, connecting-links F, upper and lower series of slats of the window-blind, and window-casing A, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the locking-stop J with the window-casing A, Operating-lever G, blind-lever E, connecting-link F, and series ofblind-slats, as herein set forth.
WILLIAM BISHOP SURDAM.
