DRAWlNG-BOAPD..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 783,973, dated February 28, 1905.
Application led November 30,1903. Serial No. 183,220.
Be it known that l, Ennns'r EUGENE Mo- ANELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Devine, in the county of Medina and State of Texas, have invented anew and useful Drawing-Stand, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drawing desks or stands, and has for its objects to produce a simple inexpensive device of this character which will be strong and durable and one which in practice will meet all the contingencies attendant upon storing the paper, instruments, boards, &c., or arranging the same for use and for maintainingI the work at the proper inclination while being executed.
To these ends the invention comprises the novel features of invention and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
`ln the accompanying' drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sec tion from front to rear on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and showing the cover raised. Fig. 3 is a detail View.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the desk, preferably of the form herein shown and consisting of side walls Qand 3, a rear wall Ll, a lower front wall 5, and a top or cover G, pivoted atits front edge by hinges 7 or otherwise to the body, which latter is surrounded at its upper and lower ends by frames 8 9, which subserve the functions of strengtheliing and ornamenting the stand.
The lid or cover G is provided along' its front edge with a rib or flange lll, against which a drawing-board may rest when the device is in use and the lid is tilted i'ipwardly, in which latter position the same is adjustably sustained by a bar or member 1l` pivoted at its upper end to the lid and having its lower end designed for engagement with teeth or steps 12, arranged in vertical spaced relation one above another and formed upon the outer edge of a bar or element 13, attached to and extending longitudinally of the inner face of rear wall et. From this arrangement it will be seen that the cover may be adjusted to and supported at any desired inclination according to the nature ol the work under execution and that when so inclined a drawing-board or the like resting upon the cover will be pre vented from escaping by the rib or llange ll).
The desk is provided with a boardrreceiving compartment 1st, open atits front and designed for the storage of drawing boards. This compartment has a bottom Al5 mounted and sustained within the body of the stand, adjacent to the longitudinal center thereof, upon which bottom there is arranged a series of upstanding ribs or llanges lll, disposed in parallel relation and constituting` guides which receive between them the lower edges ol the boards, the upper edges ol the latter being' engaged by depending studs or lingers 17, formed upon the lower edge of a transverse connecting-board disposed at the upper end of the stand.
Beneath the compartment lfl and sustained upon suitable rails 18 is a sliding' drawer 19, designed to receive drawing-paper, &c., while above the compartment and beneath the lid 6 is a second drawer 20, sustained by guides 21 and adapted in practice to receive pens, ink, instruments, Sac., this latter drawer being provided adjacent to its rear end with laterallyprojecting pins or trunnions 22, which when the drawer is pulled outward engage behind the frame 8 to prevent the accidental escape ol the drawer and at the same time permit the same to assume a slight downward inclination, whereby its :ontelits will move by gravity to a position at the lrontol the drawer for ready removal therefrom.
Pivoted to the outer face ol' the side wall 2, adjacent to the top ol the stand and within con venient reach ol the lront of the latter, is a lea l or shell 23, designed Vin practice to receive and sustain instruments, &e., l'or convenient access while in use. This leal", which is sustained in its operative position by a bar or member 24, pivoted at its upper end to the shelf and d gned, for the engagement of its lower end with a seat 25, formed in the wall of the stand, has an upstanding marginal llange or rail 26 for preventingl the accidental escape of articles from the shelf. The shelf is further provided at its outer longitudinal edge with a triangular opening or socket 27, adapted to receive a measuring-scale and preferably formed by cutting a V-shaped groove in the edge of the leaf and closing the outer face of the same by a plate or strip 28. Projecting from the opposite side wall 3 of the stand is a hook or member Q9, adapted in practice to receive T-squares, triangles, &c., which when not in use may be suspended therefrom.
From the foregoing it is apparent that I produce a device which will afford every convenience and meet all of the contingencies which arise during the execution of drawings or the like and one which is designed and especially adapted for use in manual-training schools, where the materials have to be stored at the end of each lesson. In attaining these ends it is to be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to the precise details herein set forth, inasmuch as minor changes in the form, proportion, and exact manner of assemblage of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a desk, of a pivoted cover therefor adapted to be adjusted at an inclination, guide-rails carried by the desk, a drawer supported by the rails and adapted for outward movement, and stop members carried by the drawer adjacent to its rear end and adapted for engagement with the front wall of the desk to limit the outward movement of the drawer, the rear portion of the drawer when drawn outward, being' designed to bear against the front portion of the cover to impart to the drawer a downward inclination coincident withthat of the cover when adjusted.
1n testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ERNEST EUGENE MCANELLY.
