FOLDING TYPE-WRITER CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed March 2, 1912. Serial No. 681,104.
TouZZ whom it mag "concern Be it known that I, THOMAS J. Trpmcs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moberly, in the county of Randolph and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Type- Writer Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved folding typewriter cabinet adapted for holding and carrying a typewriting machme and also adapted for use as a cabinet for conveniently storing and carrying paper, envelops, an oil can, pencils and other typewriter supplies, the object of the inyentlon being to provide an improved cabinet of this character which is strong, light, cheap, which forms an appropriate device for the typewriting machine to enable the same to be used on anv ordinary table and also forms a cabinet for inclosing a machine to exclude the latter from dust and dirt and to also enable the machine to be readily carried like a package from place to place, the invention consistingin the construction, combination and arrangement of devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a typewriter cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the same open and arranged for use. Fig. 2 1s a perspective view of the same, showing the cabinet folded.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views on the planes indicated by the lines a/a and b b of Fig. 2. I
The bottom of my improved folding typewriter cabinet is indicated at 1, the sides 2 of the cabinet are connected to the bottom by means of hinges 3 and are provided on their inner sides with pockets 4:, spaced from their rear edges, which pockets may be used for the storage of paper, carbon paper or other stationery or typewriter supplies.
The back 5 of the cabinet is fixed, and is rigidly connected at its lower side to the bottom and the top 7 of the cabinet is hinged, as at 8, to the upper side ofthe back. On the inner side of the top, near the hinged edge thereof, is a batten strip or bar 9. Chains or other suitable flexible connecting elements 10 have their lower ends connected. to the bottom, near the rear end of the latter, by means of hooks or other suitable devices 11 and their upper ends connected to the to near the hinged edge thereof, by means 0 hooks or other suitable devices 12 Hence, the top may be extended upwardly and rearwardly from the back when the cabinet is open, as shown in Fig. 2, the chains 10 serving to support the top of the cabinet in such inclined, extended position.
011 the front side of the back is a structure or casing 13 which comprises a pocket 14 for the reception of paper and a pair of pockets 15. on the front side of the pocket .14 for the reception of envelops or the like.
A pair of supporting, longitudinally slotted links 15 are pivoted at theirouter ends on the rear sides or ends of the pockets 4 of the side walls or members 2 of the cabinet. The said links bear against the front side of the structure 13 and are connected thereto by screws or studs 17 which operate in the slots of the said links. Hence, the side walls or members 2 are adapted to be folded to a closed position or to be extended outwardly to open position, horizontally arranged and level with the bottom 1 and when in such extended or open position, the side walls or members 2 are supported by the slotted links 16 as will be understood. Moreover, when thus extended, the weight of the side walls or members is imposed upon the structure 13" on the front side of the back, and the chains 10 are required to only sustain the weight and strain of the top7.
The front 18 of the cabinet is detachable with the lower end of the front and the front side of the bottom of the cabinet is provided with coacting attaching devices l920, respectively, to secure the front to the bottom of the cabinet. the said attaching devices 19 being preferably hooks and the attaching devices 20 being preferably keepers for engagement by the hooks. At the upper end of the front 18 is a lock 21. The top of the cabinet has a keeper 22 for engagement with the lock. Thesides, front and back of; the cabinet are provided with coengaging catches which are here illustrated as ball members 23 and socket members 24. Any suitable means may be employed within the scope of my invention for detachably securing the sides, front and back of the cabinet together.
'While I have herein shown and described an embodiment of my invention which I now consider a preferred form thereof, I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, construction and proporments carried by said first mentioned side wall at its upper corners adapted to engage with said locking members to hold said last mentioned walls upright, a cover plate hingedly mounted upon the upper edges of said first mentioned wall,-means for holding said cover plate in inelined position relatively to said fixed wall, means for holdin said other side walls in a'horizontal exten ed position relatively to said base board, awall arranged to set upon the remaining edge of said base board, staples extending outwardly of said last mentioned edge, hooks projecting beyond the lower edge of said last mentioned wall at right angles thereto and adapted to engage said staples, said hooks being held against pivotal movement by said staples in a direction toward the fixed wall, and means for locking the cover plate-upon the upper edge of said last mentioned wall. I
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. TYDINGS.
