Be it known that I, FRIEDRICH BAUER, a citizen of the United States, residin'g at Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful lmprovements in Pivoted Props, of which the following is a specification.
T his invention has relation to pivoted props especially adapted to be used on the front board of piano-easings; and it consists of the novel Construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a prop adapted to be attached to the front hinged board of a piano-easing. The said board is provided with a handle, through center of which extends a spring-actuated pin, the innerendof which is adapted to engage a shoulder or offset of the prop for lifting the same on its pivotal point. When the lower edge of the hinged front board of the pianocasing is swung out, the said prop is adapted to fall by gravity in such position that its lower end will come in contact with a fixed portion of the piano-easing and hold the hinged front board out in an ineline position. WVhen it is desired to close the hinged board, the pin extending through the handle above referred tois pushed, which elevates theinner or lower end of the prop, so that it may clear the stationary part of the easing, and the hinged front being without support of the prop by action of gravity resumes it normal or closed position. By utilizing this Construction of prop the front'hinged board of a piano may also be easily swung open to assume a position at right angles to the easing proper, enabling the operator to expose the works and action of the piano to View.

The pro p 1 may be made of metal or any other suitable material and is preferably eurved along its longitudinal axis. The said prop at its inner end is provided with a shoulder or ofl'set 2 and is adapted to be pivoted at the point 3 to the littings l 4, which in turn are Secured to the rear face of the hinged front board 5 of the piano-casing. The handle 6 is attached to the front board 5, and the pin extends through the said handle 6. The coilspring 8 is interposed between an enlarged portion of the pin 7 and the inner side of the handle 6. The tension of the said springSkeeps the pin in it's normal position as far away as possible from contact with the shoulder 2 of the prop 1. The inner end of said pin '7 is provided with an enlarged head 9, which is adapted to engage the shoulder 2 of the said prop.
The operation of the device is as follows: When it is desired to open the front board :3 at an angle, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the lower edge of the said front board is swung out and the end of the prop 1 falls by gravity, engaging the side of the stationary portion 10 of the piano-casing. Thus the front board is maintained in the said inelinod position. hen itis desired to close thefront board back into position, as shown in Fig. 2, the handle 6 is grasped and the pinT is pressed back against the tension of the spring& The enlarged head 9 of said pin engages the shonl- S 5 der 2 of the prop 1 and lifts the lower end of the said prop up over the edge of the portion 10 of the piano-casing. By reason of the eur- Vature of the longitudinal aXis of the prop l the said prop resting upon the edge of the 9 portion 10 is swung up into the position as shown in Fig. 9 as the front board is swung back.
The spring 8 is not absolutely essential to the operation of the device, for the reason that the weight of the prop 1 is ordinarily snllicient to keep the pin 7 in the outer position with relation to the handle 6 without the use of said spring.
Having described ny invention, what l IOO claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. Adevice of the character as described consisting of a hinged board, a prop pivoted at one end thereto and adapted to engage at its other end a stationary point, a reciprocating pin located in the said board adjacent the pivoted end of the prop and adapted to engage said prop and move same on its pivotal point.
2. A device of the character as described consistingof a hinged board, a prop pivotally attached thereto and adapted to engage at one end a stationary point, a handle attached to the board adjaeent the pivoted point oli' said prep, a pin passing through said handle and adapted to engage the prep and move the same on its pivotal point.
3. A devce of the character as described, consisting of a hinged board, a prop pivotally attached thereto and adapted to engage at one end a stationary point, a handle attached to said board adjacent the pivotal point of the prop, a spring-actuated pin passing through said handle and adapted to engage the prop to move the same on its pivotal point.
4. A device of the character as described consistingof a hinged board, a rop pivotally attached thereto, being curvcd along' its longitudinal axis and adapted to engage at one end a stationary point, a pin carried by the hinged board and adapted to engage the prop to move the same on its pivotal point.
5. A device of the character as described consisting of a hinged board, a prep pivotally attached thereto and having a shoulder, a pin carried by said board and adapted to engage a shoulder of the prop to move same on its pivotal point.
6. A device of the character as described consisting` of a hinged board, a prop pivotally attached thereto and being curved along its longtudinal axis and having a shoulder, a pin carried by said hinged board and adapted to engage the shoulder of the prop to move the same on its pivotal point.
