TOY WlNlDllVlllLL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 83,714, dated February 28, 1905.
Application filed November 20, 1903. Serial No. 181,900-
To all whom it Hui/y {XI/1,0877%."
Be it known that I, W ARI-mu C. W UNDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVyncote, county of Montgoniery, and Stateo'l Penn- 5 sylvania, have invented a new and useful improvement in Toy Windmills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specifica- I tio'n.
My invention has for its object certain improvei'nei'its in that class of toys which are known as "\vindmills, in which a series 016' vanes are pivotally attached at or near one end 5 of a bar and a handle or grasping portion formed on the other end. These vanes are in practice generally formed of paper, although sometimes they are formed of metal. With the ordinary toy windmill just described the amusement derived is that of seeing the vanes propelled around by the wind.
The purpose of my invention is in the class of toys just described to give an added amusement.
To that end i. combine with such a device a bell placed in such proximity to the vanes that in the revolution of the vanes the bell is operated by elappers attached near the outer edges of the'suecessive vanes as they pass the point of attachment of the bell.
I will nowdescribc my improvei'nent as embodied in the accompanying drawings and then point out the invention in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a front view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
A is the upright stick or red, to the upper end of which is pivotally connected the central hub Z), having the projecting fan-shzuved vanes B. Each vane has one straight side edge ex tending in a radial direction from the axis of the hub and is thence curved outwardly away from the stick toward the other side edge, the width 0] 'each vane gradually increasing from its inner end to its outer end.
The lower end of the stick or red is preferably rounded to form a grasping portion. Secured to the stick or rod A below the hub Z) and at a greater distance therefrom than the length of the vanes is the bell C. Loosely attached 5 to each vane B near its straight side edge and its outer edge is the clapper l). In the revolution of the hub as the successive vanes E pass in proximity to the hell 0 the clappers .l) strike the bell in succession.
lilaving now fully described my invention, what I. claim, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture, a toy v windmill comprising an upright stick or rod, a 60 plurality of fan-shaped vanes pivoted on a horizontal axis on the upper end of said rod. a bell secured to said stick beneath said vanes, and clappers loosely attached to the vanes near their outer edges and adapted to successively 5 strike the bell in the rotation of the vanes, substantially described.
9.. As a new article of manufacture, a toy windmill comprising an upright stick or rod, a plurality of fan-shaped vanes pivoted on a hori- 7 zontal axis on the upper end of said rod, each vane having one straight side edge extending in a radial direction from its axis of rotation and thence bent outwardly toward its other side edge, the width of each vane gradually 75 increasing from the inner end to the outer end thereof, a bell secured to said stick or rod below said 11 ab and at a greater distance therefrom than the length of the vanes, and a clapper loosely attached to each vane near the corner 30 formed at the junction of its outer edge and straight side edge, substai'ltiall y as d ascribed.
.l n testimony oi which invention .1 have hereunto set my hand, at Philadel ihia, Pennsylvania, on this 11th day of November, 1903.
