SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,868, dated. June 25, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFRED L. BERNARDIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I

Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is partly a longitudinal section and partly a side view. Fig. 2 is a section taken where the broken line 0/: 0c is shown on Fig. 1.

This invention has relation to whirling toys; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of devices, all as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating this invention, the letter A'designates a tubular whistle, having the air-outlet B near its end and above a yoke or connection 0, to which is pivoted a small wind-wheel D, having angularly-deflected blades E, which move in the path of the wind which issues from the outlet B when the whistle is sounded. The direction of the tube A is therefore tangential to thecircumference of the wheel.

The yoke or connection 0 consists of the arms 9, which extend from the tube A parallel to each other, forming an angle with said tube. The ends h of the arms a are turned back over apertures or pivot-bearin gs is, made in said arms to receive the ends of the pivot l of the wheel D. The reflected ends h serve as stops to keep the pivot in proper position. The tubular whistle has its outlet, as above stated. near the yoke C, and just above said outlet in the barrel is located the deflectingpiece or whistle-plug m, having its inclined face directed downward and outward between the arms of the yoke, so that the wind issuing from the outlet will strike the ends of the blades E and cause a rapid whirling motion of the wheel. 4

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

The toy consisting of the tubular whistle having its deflecting-piece at the air-outlet, the yoke having the pivot-bearings and reflected ends, and the bladed wheel circumferentially tangent to the barrel of the whistle and pivot-ed in the yoke, substantially as specifled.
