Be it known that we, Tnoinas SrU'rzMAN and AND1-inw A. Donny, citizens ol the United hltates, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State ot Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, ol'l which the 'following is a specilication.
'lhe purpose ol" our invention is to provide an 'extensiointahle which is siinple, strong, and comparatively lig'lit in construction and in which provision is inade tor sui'iporting the table at the center by ineans oi a leg` which is connected to the table in such manner as to remain in a central position when the table is closed or extended.
The details of our invention will he pointed out in the following' speeilication, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a bottom plan view of the tabletop and extension-frame, showing' the table extended in full lines, its closed position being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 et Fig. l. The l'itting lll is in'orided with a transverse opening, and a metal tube 2U issecured within said opening and projects to equal distances beyond the sides ol the litting. '.lhe ends otl the tube abut against the vertical flanges T ot the hars and Zi', and a holt 2.1. extends through said tube and through the slots in all of the side bars of-the extension-frame. rThis bolt, as shown, is provided with a square portion 21 near one end, which prevents the bolt from turning in the guide-slots, and with a wing-nut 22 at its opposite end for the purpose of clamping the side bars against the ends of the tube 20. The tube is thus securely held in position and forms a distance-piece, by means of which the leg 16 is held midway between the sides ot' the table. The leg 16, being secured to the distance-pieces at their intersecting or crossing' point, is held rigidly in an upright position, the piece 2O preventing lateral inclination of the leg and the piece 19 preventing inclination of the leg longitudinally of the table.
To length or shorten the table, it is merely necessary to loosen the wing-nut 22, and the extension-framemay then be opened or closed. The distance-piece 19 has a bearing against the parts C and D of the table-top in the most extended position of the table, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. Then the table is closed, the leg 16 is centered in a longitudinal direction by the abutment of the bars a2 and 7/2 against the ends ot' the distance-piece 19, said bars forming stops for the distance-piece, and when the table is extended to its full length the leg is centered in a longitudinal direction by the engagement of the ends ot' the bolt 21 with the end walls of the slots in the side bars of the extension-frame. Then desired, the center leg and distance-pieces may be removed by removing the bolt 21, or any of the legs may be removed by unscrewing them from the sockets in which they are held.
Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
ise-
1. In a table, the combination with an extensible frame having parallel side bars, top pieces secured to the opposite end portions of said frame, and legs arranged to support the table at its ends, of a distance-piece arranged transversely of the table between said side bars, and connected thereto, a distance-piece arranged longitudinally of the table in sliding engagement with the table-top, and connected at its central portion to said transverse distance-piece, a leg secured to said distancepieces at their intersecting point, and stops secured to the top pieces in line with said longitudinally-arranged distance-piece.
2. In a table, the combination with an extensible frame having parallel side bars provided with longitudinal slots, top pieces secured to the opposite end portions of said frame, and legs arranged to support the table at its ends, of a tubular distance-piece arranged transversely otl the table and having' its ends abutting against said side bars, a bolt extending longitudinally through said tube and through said slots, and adapted to clamp the side bars against the ends of the tube, a
distance-piece arranged longitudinally of the table inl sliding engagement with the tabletop, and connected at its central portion to said tubular distance-piece, a leg secured to said distance-pieces at their intersecting point, and stops secured to the top pieces in line with said longitudinally-arranged distancepiece.
3. In a table, the combination with an extensible frame having parallel side bars, top pieces secured to the opposite end portions of said Jframe, and legs arranged to support the table at its ends, ot a distance-piece arranged longitudinally of the table in sliding engagement with the table-top, stops secured to the top pieces in line with said distance-piece, a litting secured to the center of said distancepiece, said fitting having' a transverse opening therethrough and a socket adapted to receive a table -leg, and a distance-piece extending' through said opening and connected to the side bars of the frame.
4. In a table, the combination with an extensible frame having parallel side bars provided with longitudinal slots, top pieces secured to the opposite end portions o'tl said frame, and legs arranged to support the table at its ends, of a distance-piece arranged lon- I gitudinall y of the table in sliding engagement with the table-top, stops secured to the top pieces in line with said distance-piece, a ttting secured to the center of said distance-piece, said tting having a transverse opening therethrough and a socket adapted to receive a tableleg, a tubular distance-piece secured within said opening, and having its ends abutting against said side bars, and a bolt extending through the slots in said side bars, and longitudinally through said tubular distance-piece.
5. In a table, an extensible frame consisting of two sections, each having parallel longitudinally-slotted side bars connected in sliding engagement with the corresponding bars of the opposing section, top pieces secured to said sections, and legs arranged to support the table at its ends, in combination with a distance-piece arranged transversely of the table between said side bars, a bolt projecting' from the ends ot' said distance-piece through the slots in the side bars of both sections, a distance-piece arranged longitudinally ot' the table and connected at its central portion to said transverse distance-piece, a leg supporting said distance-pieces, and stops secured to the top pieces in line with said longitudinallyarranged distance-piece.
6. In a table, the combination with two top or end pieces, of an extensible frame consisting of two sections, each section comprising parallel metal side bars L-shaped in cross-section, and an end bar, the side bars of eachv section having vertical flanges arranged parallel with the correspondingfianges of the opposing section, and horizontal flanges connected to a top piece and extending laterally IOS IIO
