IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE HAY-FORKS.
Elige Srlgrhule telenet tu in tlgest tttttts ntmt 2mb melting glatt ut tigt time,
'IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it;kno\vn that I, M. H. POPE, of Susquehanna Depot, in the county of Susquehanna, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a' new and improved IIay -Harpoon; and I do hereby declare that the following is a ffull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication.
The drawing represents a central'section of my improved hay-fork.
The invention consists in construction ot' certain parts of the hay-fork, which willhereafter be fully set forth. i
The shank A is provided with the tines et a, pivoted thereto at Z1, which tines are thrust out horizontally from the shank and case B, through the slots it' in the latter, when the said shank is pushed down.
A slotted arm, L, is .pivoted to the cap E at e, and the bifurcations of this arm pass down by the shank when the latter is to 4he'locked in either of the two positions which the notches m and n permit.
'A Iever,f, having a ring, Z, and shoulders,'c, is pivoted to the cap at g; and, when the forked arm t is pressed down horizontally, the levelf is raised vertically, which brings the reduced part below the shoulders of said lever into the slot of the arm 7L, and the shoulders c pass above the slotted arm, as shown, thus holding the shank rmly, tfor the bottom of the slot in the arm bears against the side of the shank, and actuates the notch m to catch upon the edge of the hole through which the shank passes.
The same operation is required when the shank is thrust down, and the tine's are to be locked in a hori- Azontal position, suitablefor lifting hay. When the hay is to be discharged from the tines, the tripping-line, attached to the ring of the leverf, is drawn, which-liberates the arm It, and the notch n, being slightly bevelling or rounding, will slip from tbe edge ofthe cap, and permit the case to slip downward, thus drawing in the tines.
1 The pointed head D is screwed into the case, as shown, and, being a separate attachment, enables the case to be made at less cost than when the point is a continuous part of the same.
` The point is also readily detachable, vfor the purpose of removing the hay-seed, dirt, and other foreignsubstances that may get into the case.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The slotted arm 7L, leverf, both pivoted to the cap E of the case B of a hay-harpoon, al1 substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
MJ H. POPE.
