GARDEN-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 28, 1911.
Application filed May 13, 1909. Serial No. 495,746.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VALENTIN Serum) and AUGUST VON Ow, subjects of the German Emperor, residing at Neuhausen, Republic of Switzerland, and Biisingen, Baden, Germany, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garden- Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garden tool which is so arranged that it may be used as a spade, shovel and hoe, and also as a fork and rake.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, in which Figure 1, is a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of the device; and Fig. 2, is a sectional detail view.
At the lower end of a handle a, is fastened a sleeve 5, in which a bolt 0, slides, which bolt is under the influence of a spiral spring which keeps the bolt engaged in one of the indentations e e c of the head 6, of a shovel blade f. The bolt 0, can be moved against the pressure of the spring (Z, and out of engagement with the indentations by a pin 71, passing through a slot g, of the sleeve 6 and having screw threaded engagement with the bolt 0. The slot 9, is covered by a plate 2', to prevent the entry of dirt. The shovel 7", turns about a screw-bolt 7c, removably fitted in the sleeve Z). On the lower end of the sleeve 5, a second sleeve Z (Fig. 2) is adjustably secured and can be fastened by the screw m, to cover the head 6, and prevent dirt penetrating into the sleeve 5.
In the position of the blade f, shown in Fig. 1, in full lines in which the bolt 0, engages in the indentation 6 the tool serves as a spade.
hen the tool is to be used as a shovel for throwing, the screw it, is loosened slightly and moved upward and the bolt is thereby brought out of engagement with the indentation 6 so that the blade can be rotated into the position 1, shown by dotted lines and fixed at an obtuse angle to the handle a. On releasing the screw lb, the bolt 0, under the influence of the spring (Z, springs into the indentation c and retains the blade in this position. To guard against an unintentional loosening of the bolt, the screw it, is again tightened.
If the tool is to be used as a hoe, the blade, after loosening the bolt cl, is turned into the position 11, shown in dotted lines, in which the bolt engages the indentation 6 In place of the shovel blade f, a fork can be used having a similar head to that of the shovel blade f. The latter is in this case removed after loosening the bolt 70, so that the fork can be inserted; when the latter is turned into the position 11, the tool can be used as a rake.
To facilitate the interchanging of the shovel blade, a screw driver may be fitted in the upper end of the handle a. The sleeve Z, is provided with a slot Z so that this may be pushed over the head of the shovel or fork when it is in the position 11.
e claim-- 1. In a garden tool, a handle, a sleeve on the handle, a bolt longitudinally movable in the sleeve, a tool having a circular head, said head being pivotally connected with said sleeve, said head having indentations engaged by said bolt, a screw having engagement with said bolt and adapted for efiecting and retaining the adjustment of said bolt.
2. In a garden tool, a handle, a sleeve on the handle, a bolt longitudinally movable in the sleeve, a second sleeve secured to the first said sleeve, a blade pivotally secured to said second sleeve, a head on said blade, peripheral indentations in said head, said bolt adapted to laterally engage said indentations, a slot in first said sleeve, a plate covering said slot, and a screw through said plate and said slot and having threaded engagement with said bolt for regulating and retaining the adjustment of said bolt, substantially as shown and'specified.
In testimony whereof, we affix our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
