BROOKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BLANK FOR COVERING EXTENSION-EDGE BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 781,766, dated February 7, 1905.
Application filed July 16, 1903. Serial No. 165,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOCH BLAKELEY (Jaw- 'IHRAY, a subject of King Edward VII of Great Britain, residing at Broekton, county of Plymouth, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blanks for Covering Extension-Edge Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covering-blanks for paper boxes, and particularly to blanks :for covering boxes having an extension edge. It has been customary heretofore in the manufacture of these boxes to cover the different parts of the box with separate pieces and usually to do so before the parts are united. Thus it was the practice to cover the bottom with the extension edge before applying it to the box, and after it was so covered and united the box sides were covered by a separate strip pasted around it and fitted down against the extension edge. This, however, was expensive and generally unsatisfactory, as it did not make a neatly-finished box even under the best conditions and most careful operatives.
The present invention contemplates the application of the covering-paper in one piece and provides for that purpose a blank so shaped as to leave portions arranged and adapted to lit and cover all the parts of the box desired.
In the drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout, Figure l is a plan of the blank. Fig. 2 is a view of the covered box. Fig. 3 is a modified form of blank, and Fig. 4 the box to which it is applied.
The blank consists of a body portion B, inclosed by the dotted lines 1 and of the size of the extension-bottom of the box. Surrounding this body B are arranged extension-covering portions 1), shaped to cover the extension edge, and outside of these are side sections O, having on their ends extensions 0 for overturning on the upper edges of the box.
O represents flaps for turning the corners, and the sides bearing them are bent up and pasted before the other sides are brought up.
Fig. 3 indicates a modification of the blank shown in Fig. 1 for an eight-sided box, as shown in Fig. 4:. It will be noted that the alternate side sections are provided with the corner-flaps, and these sections in applying the blank to the box must be pasted down first. This is for convenience in operating, as it has been found desirable to turn up the flaps in opposite pairs; but the principle involved in this is the same as in the four-sided box, and obviously the present invention can be adapted to boxes of any shape or any number of sides, the shape, number, and arrangement of sections and flaps being adapted to the parts to be covered.
Although the extension is mentioned herein as on the bottom of the box and is so shown, the cover, with its extension-top, is intended to be included also, as its construction and application are the same.
What I therefore claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A covering-blank for an extension-edge box consisting of a body portion, substantially of the shape of the bottom of the box, and flapped portions adapted to cover the sides of the box, and extension-covering portions between said flaps and said body.
2. A covering-blank for an extension-edge box consisting of a bottom-covering portion, side-covering portion and extension-covering portions.
8. A covering-blank for an extension-edge box consisting of a bottom-covering portion having flaps on each of its sides and extension-covering portions located on each side between said body portion and said flaps.
A. A covering-blank for an extension-edge box consisting of a body portion shaped to fit the bottom of the box, extension covering portions shaped to fold over and cover the extension edge of said box, and side flaps shaped to cover the sides of the box, and wings upon the upper edge of said fiapped portions to overturn and bind the upper edge of the box side.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ENOCII BLAKELEY CAW'IIIRAY.
