vIMPROVEMENT IN PAPER BOXES.

Specification forlnirg part of Letters Patent No. 147,548, dated February 17, 1874; application led October 4, 1873.

To all 'whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, L. WHEELER BEECHER, of Westville, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Paper Box 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact de! scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention is a paper box having the edges of its sides and ends folded over for the purpose of obtaining greater *strength with any given thickness of material, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure l represents a plan view of the paper strip from which the box blanks are made; Fig. 2, a plan view of an end of the blank as folded to form the box Fig. 3, a perspective view of the box, and Fig. 41. a transverse sectional elevation.

A representsa paper strip, of any suitable thickness, width, and length, the side edges of which, by any suitable means, are folded over a proper distance, as shown at a., and preferably pasted to secure them iu place.

, The strip is then, by any suitable means, cut,

as indicated by the full lines x m, and scored for bending, as indicated by the dotted lines .r x. By this means it is separated into blanks, each of which, when properly folded and pasted, is adapted to form a box or boxcover.

It will be readily understood that the flaps b are bent up to forma portion of the ends, and the flaps c c to form the sides, the projecting ends c c of the latter being folded upon each other and upon the iiaps b to complete the ends, as clearly shown in the drawing.

A box constructed as described, with folded or doubled edges, possesses great strength, and, consequently, it may, if desired, be made of thinner and cheaper paper than would otherwise be possible.

If desired, any suitable covering-paper may be used in connection with the body paper.

It will be understood that this box is made1 from a continuous strip of paper having folded edges upon its sides, the fold being formed the entire length of the strip before the blank is made.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The box described, having its sides and ends provided with a double edge, formed by folding the edge ofthe body paper upon itself, as set forth.
