SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 777,076, dated December 13, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON J. OIAIAFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ripon, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refrigerator Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an attachment for refrigerators and ice-boxes, &c.; and it consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts the preferred form whereof will be hereinafter clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide an attachment of the character specified which will enable the attendant to place a charge of ice within a refrigerator or ice-box without damage to the refrigerator, 850., as by letting the cake of ice fall upon the bottom of the receptacle provided therefor, as is common.

A further object of my invention is to pro vide means for introducing the ice through the side of the refrigerator-body directly upon the floor of the ice-chamber, thereby preventing all. severe strain and blows incident to dropping a heavy piece of ice in position, as is now done.

Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, considered in connection with the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of my invention complete applied to use upon an ordinary family refrigerator. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top of a refrigerator or ice-box, showing my invention in an elevated position ready for the reception of a load of ice. Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of Fig.

2, while Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the upper portion of an ice-box or refrigerator, showing the ice-receiving platform in an elevated position.

In order to conveniently refer in the following specification to the various details of my invention and cooperating accessories, numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to asimilar part throughout the several views.

Referring to the numerals on the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the end walls of an ice-box or refrigerator of the usual or any preferred construction, while 3 and 4 show rear and side walls thereof, respectively. I have also provided a suitable lid or closure member 5, as is common; and, briefly described, my invention consists in providing a movable floor or platform provided for or located in the icechamber and upon which a charge of ice is disposed. In the present instance the floor 6 is made of corrugated sheet metal of proper strength and character, whiclnif deemed n ecessary, may be reinforced longitudinally by means of the frame 7, each end of which is provided with an aperture to receive the end of the handles 8, the ends of said handles being secured in position by suitable nuts 9 or the equivalent thereof, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and L. The handles 8 are rotatably located in position whereby when the platform is drawn up by said handles the latter may be partially rotated, so as to bring the lugs or 1aterally-extending arms 1'0 into engagement with the plate 11, which latter is countersunk in a suitable recess in the edge of the end walls 1 and 2, as fully shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The upper ends of the rods or handles 8 are provided with the handle-sections proper, 12, which are pivotallv secured in position so that they will normally incline inward, and thus be out of the way of engagement with the end walls 1 and 2 when the ice-platform 6 is lowered into its normal position.

I have also provided for the upper end of the front wall 4 a door 13, which is so disposed that it will be substantially on the same line or plane with the floor-section or platform 6 when said door is disposed in an open position. The door 13 is held in a substantially horizontal plane or in an open position by means of the link members 14:, pivoted together and attached to the side walls 1 and 2 and also to the ears or brackets 15, carried by the door 13. When, therefore, the door-13 is opened, it will afford a strong shelf or support for a heavy piece of ice, and when the ice is placed upon the door it may be readily moved upon the ice-platform 6 and the door closed. hen it is desired to avoid the jar incident to dropping a piece of ice into the refrigerator, the ice-platform or floor-section 6 is brought into an elevated position by means of the rods or arms 8, when said arms may be partially rotated, so as to bring the lugs in position upon the plates 11. The ice is then placed upon the platform, which is thus substantially flush with the upper edges of the side and end walls, and after the ice has been placed in position a person or two persons may grasp the rods or handles proper, 12, and gently lower the floor or platform 6 into its normal position, thereby causing the ends of the reinforcing member 7 to rest upon the cross-bars 16, secured at a proper point to the walls of the refrigerator, it being understood that a suitable drip-plate or diaphragm 17 may be also provided to direct the water from the melting ice into the discharge-pipe, as is common.

It will be seen that I have provided reliably, efficient means for enabling a charge of ice to be introduced into the refrigerator without damage to the latter, as by dropping the ice heavily upon the floor of the ice-chamber, and that the various parts of my invention may be cheaply and expeditiously manufactured and readily assembled each in its respective place, and while I have described the preferred construction and combination of parts I desire to comprehend in this application all such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope and purview of my invention.

Believing that the construction and manner of using my invention have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.

That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described attachment for refrigerators, ice-boxes, &c., comprising a movable platform for the ice-chamber, suitable handles or carrying-rods 8 provided for the ends of said platform; handle members proper for the upper ends of said rods; extensions or lugs provided for the lower ends of said rods whereby a partial rotation of the rods will bring said lugs into engagement with the edges of the end walls and thereby temporarily support the platform in an elevated position and plates in the end Walls to receive the lugs, all combined substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
