Description

J. s. JBWBTT.
FENCE GATE.
No. 77,492. 1 Patented' May 5, .1868.
WML ff l @www @einen fates ateat @ffice JASPER s. JEWEM* 0F OTTAWA, ILLINOIS.
I/tters Patent No'. 77,492, elated May 5, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN IENGE-GATBS.
To ALL WHOM I'r .MAY GONGERN:
Beit known that I, JASPER S. JnwETr, of Ottawa, in the eountyAof La Salle, in the State of. Illinois, have invented a new and improved Fence-Gate; and I doA hereby declare that-the followingis a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention censists'in a certain improvement in fence-gates, and-ina novel manner oflconsti-noting the same, whereby a person o n a wagon or on horseback is enabled to open and close the gate, without descending to the ground or anyways disturbing his position, as the rings which arel to b'e pulled to operate the gatek are overhead in the middle of the track. i
My invention also consists in providing an arrangement of springs, catches, and levers, by means of which the gate is locked, so that no rooting hog or other animal can possibly open the gate, as often happens with gates in which there is no'locking-arrangement provided.
To enable others skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe -its construe@ .tion and operation. v .v
Figure 1, in the drawings, is a vertical plan of the gate when closed.
Figure 2 is a horizontal plan.
Figure Bis aseethn through a .11, fig. 2.`
Figure 4 is a vertical-section representing the mechanism by means of which tho gate is locked and unlocked. I set deeply into the groundtwo double posts, A A, which are conneetedat the top by the framework made i of thotimbers B B B. 'I'he gates C C reach half way each, and meot at the contre. These gates C C are'supported at the centre by the block D, which is a short post sunk into the ground. At each end the gates C C are supported on two pivots, E E and F F, on which they swing up and down. The top rails, G G, of the gates C C are hollow, in order to admit a string or chain, as will be described hereafter. Each of these. top rails G G projects through the pests A A, the outer ends being loaded with weights, in ordervto counterbalanee the weight of the gates C C. To the hinges or tumblers H H are attached the rods I I, which communicate above with the levers-J J. Theselevers swing on the fulcro. K K, and their inner ends are inserted into a hollow casting, L. ASaid casting L is made in the shape of o. hollow cross, and has two more levers, MM, inserted into it, which swing on the fulcra N N, and which have attached at their outer ends the ropes O O, with rings at their ends. The object of the' hollow casting L is that all the levers, J .I andvM M, connected with it, must move together,` their radiating disposition not allowing said hollow casting L to swing sideways, but only to go straight up and down. i
It will'be seen that by pulling' either ofthe ropes, O O, the motion will be communicated through the rods I I tb the gates C C, causing both to open at ,the same time, by folding upon each side and between the posts A A, as shown by the lines in'rcd, fig. 1. Two ropes', O O', pa'ss through 'the costi-ng L, and over and around the pulleys lll t, terminating in rings.
I By pulling either of the ropes C O', when the gate is open, Vthe casting L, b'eing thereby pulled downwards',-
carries with it the levers J J and rods I I, thus'oausing the gates C C to swing down and close.
In iig. 4. is shown the mechanism by which the gates C C are locked when let down. The central uprlghts, l? I, of the gates C C are made hollow, and .coni-ain' the iron catches Q, 'Q and springs R It. Ropes or chains, S, pass from-the catches Q Q to thc hinges or tumbler-s H H.
As shown hy the lines in red, iig. 4, when the rods I I are pressed down, the tumbler-s H H are thrown beekwards, pulling the strings or chains S, and thus causing the catches Q Q to escape their hold on the bolts T T in the block l). 'lwo springs, U U, are adapted-to throw up the tumblers H H in their original position after' the gates C C areilet down and locked.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is- 1. 'I hc two gates C C, the rods II, the levers J J, thc levers lll lll', the hollow casting L, the ropes 0 O, andl the ropes O O', when combined with eachother in u double fence-gate, and constructed substantially ns and for the purpose described in the foregoing spccificton.
2. The catches Q Q, the ropes or chains S, tho'tumblers I'I H, the springs R R, und the springs U U, when combined ivith cach other in n doublc fence-gate, and constructed substantially os and for the purposedescribed in the foregoing specification.
