Letters Patent No. 77,313, dated April 2S, 1868.

TO ALL'WHOLWI IT' MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FQJ. PERKINS, of Salem, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement inButtons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe saure, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of this specification, in whichv Figure V1 is a transverse section of a button made according to my invention.
Figure 2 is an inverted plan view of the same. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The object of this invention is to provide a detachable button, which, when attached to a garment, will bel held thereon with much greater security than is found practicable with others of its class hitherto devised,
without being inferior in anyrespect to, such` others in the facility and convenience with which it may be applied to orremoved'from the garment.
The invention consists in the combination of a slotted disk, having two holding-lips, and a slotted locking` plate, so combined with the circnmferentially-grooved stem of a suitable button as to ei'ectually obtain the result mentioned. f
To enable others to understand'the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings. Y
A. represents the button itself, made of any suitable shape or material, and furnished at its inner side with a cylindrical metallic stem or shank, a, formed circumferentially, at the outer end of which is a groove, a. Shown at b is a disk, the two opposite edges of which are made straight and parallel with each other, and turned outward at 'right angles to the flat surface of the disk, to form two holding-lips, the. purpose of which will presently herein appear.
Near one of the edges just mentioned of the disk is the enlarged 'end a of a slot, c', which extends inward to the centre of the disk, the enlarged portion a being of such size that theend of the stem a may be passed .through it, while the main or -inner portion of the slot is Aof a width corresponding to the thickness of the stem at the groove a.
Indicated a-t d is a plate, the two opposite edges of which are straight, and parallel with each other, and which is of such width that it may be tted between the lips of the disk b, aspresently explained, and has formed in it a slot, d', corresponding in shape and size with that of the disk Z1, the enlarged-outer end or portion of such slot d beingindicated at cli.
In order-to attach the button to a'garment, the disk b and plate d are removed Irom the stem a, and the stem is passed through, the fabric, whereupon the disk b has'the end of the stem passed through the enlarged portion a of its slot c', which being done, the plate is drawn to bring .thestem to the inner end ofthe slot, with the edges at th-e sides of the slot'situated in tliegroove a ofthe stem. The outer end of the stem is then passed through the enlarged portion CZ of the slot d,in Athe plate, until the plate is brought to the groove of the stem, and is then pushed to bring the stem to the inner ends of its slot, with the edges of the slot in the groove, whereupon theplate springs down between the lips 6 of the disk, and rests snugly upon the surface of the latter, and is thus held from turning thereon, the' slot ol'being at that. side of the stem a opposite to that at which the slot c of the disk I is situated, in such manner that 'the portion c of the plate d, by'pre venting the movement of the'stern in the slot of the disk, eil'ectually prevents the` dislodgment of either` the plate or the disk from the stem, so that the fabric of the garment, being situated between the disk and plate at the outer end of the sten1,' and the button at the opposite end thereof', as shown in red outline in fig. 1, the button is eil'ectually secured to such fabric. v
In order to detach the button, the portion e of the plate ai is forced away from the adjacent surface of the disk, and the plate is drawn laterally, to bring the stern to the enlarged portion'of the slot of such plate, as
indicated in blue outline in fig. 2, whereupon the latter may beslipped from the stem, and the dish-,being no longer locked upon the stem, maybe readily detached therefrom, thus permitting the ready removal of the" button from tllegarmet.
n What I claim as my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters Patent, iez-I .The disk 6, formed with parallel lips b', in combination with the plate d, havingparallel straight sides, and each slotted, as described, for application to the eircumferentially-grooved stem a of the button, essentially as shown and set forth. i
F. J. PERKINS.
