Description
PATENTED OCT. 11, 1904.
L. G. KAHL. FASTENER. APPLICATION :IILBD APR. 18. 1904.
.NO MODEL.
' ing had UNITED STATES Patented October 11, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIE C. KAHL, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE WATERBURY MACHINE COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
FASTENER- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 771,912, dated October 11, 1904.
Application filed April 18, 1904.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIE C. KAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference betherein to the accompanying drawlngs.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fasteners, and refers more particularly to fasteners of the ball-and-socket type.
It is the object of my invention, among other things, to construct a fastener in which the socket will have the maximum yielding capacity when the ball is being placed therein or taken therefrom without impairing its strength, the cheapness of its manufacture, or its holding qualities.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the fastener having certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures, Figure 1 is an elevation of the socket of my invention with the retaining-washer and fabric to which it is applied in section. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the ball. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the socket, and. Fig. 4 is a vertical section thereof upon line A B of Fig. 3.
In carrying out my invention I construct a socket member 1 with a substantially cylindrical solid bottom barrel portion 2 and a portion 3, the neck 4 of the barrel portion being reduced in diameter at its stud or ball receiving end and rounded so as to form a flaring throat 5 upon the inside. Through the flange 3, adjacent to the outer edge thereof and the sidesof the barrel portion 2, midway of its length, are aplurality of enlarged opensented by the numeral Serial No. 203,651. (No model.)
Slotted fasteners have been made prior to my invention; but I am yet to be advised of one being made where the slots terminate in openings of greater width than said slots and do not extend through either the full width of the flange or the length of the barrel.
My fastener is secured to the fabric (repre- 8) with a Washer 9, that is placed over the end of the barrel, which is then spread outwardly a little at its extreme end into the countersink in said washer, as shown in Fig. 1..
The ball 10 can be of any preferred construction and need not be described here in detail.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention aside from those herein shown and suggested, and
- I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination with a fastener of a socket therein comprising a substantially cylindrical barrel portion having a reduced inwardly-curved throat-forming section at the stud-receiving end thereof, a flange portion extending out- Wardly from said portion of the inwardlyopenings in the flange, substantially as decurved section of the barrel, and being proscribed. IO vided with a plurality of enlarged openings In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in therethrough, said barrel portion being also presence of two Witnesses.
provided'with enlarged openings substantially LOUIE C. KAHL. centrally disposed therein and having slots WVitnesses:
narrower than the openings leading therefrom HENRY T. CRoss,
through the throat-forming section to the l ROGER S. WOTKYNs.
